i have a bad exhaust valve and i need a head gasket . i had this generator for 10 years. One exhaust pipe on a cold start puffs white smoke and i can here it make a skip tissing sound once or twice for 2 minutes and then goes away . Then it runs great , i think one exhaust valve is going bad. It has no blowby at the oil fill and does not use any oil and the oil stays very clean. I don't know where i can buy parts , does anyone know where i can get parts for this machine

yes the glow plugs are working . The tissing sound now and then as it is puffing white smoke for two minutes sounds like a burnt exhaust valve . if it was a skip that would be more of a intake valve or a bad injector but the tissing sound comes from the exhaust pipe. I check the injector buy placeing it in a different cylinder and no change .

Has this machine always run like this? Or did you ever see it behave "Normally"?
As for the parts, you can get the updated head gaskets direct from Cummins for about $15 ea.
Also try www.Onanparts.com
If you need a valve, also look around on the internet, but do not search under "Mep-003 valve" search by the engine code, DJC
Otherwise I may be able to provide you with valves.

Have the injectors checked before you rebuild. If its an internal problem such as a valve, head, piston, etc. it doesn't go away when warm. Ive had several with the same symptoms that clear after warming and it was the injectors. I have one now that smokes on one cylinder all the time. I had the injectors check and were perfect, even switched the injectors around not believing it could be internal and still smoked. I finally took the head off and something fell into the cylinder and cracked the piston.

Yes it did that , when i got it but it was just a little, and went away in 1 minute and stops smoking . Now it getting worse takes about 3 minutes and is starting to smoke more. But it always smoked at start up and made that Tiss noise 5 or 6 times and when it did that Tiss noise it didn't smoke as it made that noise. And skipped when it made that noise

Well, try reading this post.

I still can't explain why, but I have an ultra low ( 6 ) hour 003, completely untouched since new and had the exact same symptoms as you.
I tried everything! testing compression, lapping valves, swapping gaskets, swapping heads around , glow plugs etc and nothing helped. Cyl 3 would always skipped and smoked heavily for 30+ seconds, then clear up.
The problem turned out to be the incorrect timing button installed from the beginning.
Injection timing was late, but for some reason only seemed to affect cyl 3.
Got the correct button in it now and it runs perfectly with ZERO smoke!

Thank you for that info!! where can i get these buttons ?, and how technical is it to install this button ? your not far from me i like to talk to you about doing this. sounds a lot easier than pulling the head off. I have the breakdown info on the fuel timing is this the one i have? 1637924055276.png Thank you for your help . My email is bedrock315@comcast

The timing buttons are available on the internet. I also have a variety of them in my stash, but be forewarned, the thicker buttons are most commonly the needed ones ( #14 15 and 16 ) and of course these are the hardest to find and most expensive.
The procedure to test is laid out in the TM and changing buttons requires removing the pump, but it's really not that hard once you understand the procedure.
You're only about 1/2 hr. to 40 minutes from me.
I will give you a call and I can help you with it.
There are 2 different pumps, the Ambac M50 and the Bosch PSU, but both use the same buttons and the test / button swap is the same either way.

what button size did you take out and what size did you put back in? do you have any extra buttons i can buy off you ? i can buy buttons off ebay individually and they are about $40 a pece. I read on another thread about someone having the same problem. he said about having a popping out of the exhaust now and then and that what my problem sounds like too . you where on that thread too . I bought two top end head gaskets sets on ebay but befor i do that i like to try what your saying. i can start up the generator to show you what its doing
looking forward to seeing you and will compensate for your time thank you.

In my case I think I removed a #12 and installed a #14 if I recall correctly.
I think I had to step up 2 sizes.
I have lots of buttons, but have used up most of the thicker ones.
I would need to see what size you need. I don't think I have anything thicker than #12 or #13 left in my pile!
Lets plan on getting you down to RI in the next few weeks and see what you have going on.
In the mean time I will take a look and see what buttons I have left.

the generator is mounted on a frame with big steel 6'' wheels and can be moved very easley . I can load it in my 12' trailer with a ramp . just let me know when you want me to bring it down and i can load it up beforehand..

You need to read the procedure in the TM, before trying this. It will make your and Ray's job MUCH easier. What ever you do, do not remove the IP before Ray gets there, without reading the TM first, in an effort to make the job go faster. Like Ray explained, its easy if you understand the procedure.

White smoke is usually water in the fuel system from condensation. I would check the tank cap seal.
We use diesel additive here in Kansas, that reduces the white smoke during startup.

The waterseperator works so and so and allows water into the fuel line when not emptied daily before each start.
I believe it’s one of the first items in the starting instructions or better, preparation to start
