I am looking to purchase a 4L80E to replace the TH400 in my M1028. I am not familiar with the timeline when the newer 4L80E units became available which had the Park pawl. I have found a source for a company purporting to have a quantity of HMMWV 4L80E units already rebuilt and ready to ship, but I want to make sure these are the correct transmissions with the park pawl. Here is the info on their site -

Remanufactured 4L80E Transmission for HMMWV Applications
  • OEM Part Number 57K3570, 57K4408, 57K6204
  • NSN 2520-01-489-0850
  • 2520-01-489-0850 is a replacement for:
    • 2520-01-475-1083
    • 2520-01-461-7077
    • 2520-01-459-8531
    • 2520-01-439-6831
  • Includes torque converter and EGR sensors.
  • Remanufactured to like-new condition, and dynamometer tested to OEM specifications.
  • 1-Year warranty.
  • There is no core charge for these transmissions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Nope...every 4L80E transmission came from the factory with a "Park" position...and of course a new letter "P" inside the vehicle on the shifter Assy.

Only the Hmmwv 400 [ 3L80 ] trans had no park, but could be added.

Thanks everyone for the clarification regarding the Park pawl. My next question is, were there differences in the 4L80E units as they were developed and put in service over the years? Is there a specific NSN I should be watchful for? Is there one better than the others?

96 and below had a different 4l80e....cooling system upgrade on 97 and above.
96 and below had both cooling tube connections side by side, same as 3l80 [ 400turbo ].
97 + cooling tubes are seperated, and pans are different.

The 4L80E that AMG put into the Hummers was an RV Spec Transmission. I'd guess there are some differences inside to make them handle the higher vehicle weight, but any other 4L80E will fit and work as long as you have the right torque converter for the diesel engine. They moved the trans cooler lines at some point but that is just a bit more work for you to plumb the cooler lines that's all.
