Which truck would make a better bobbed rig, assuming moderate off road driving plus 60 mph highway driving? We live at 7500 ft. elevation, so there would be a lot of up and down canyon driving in the snow. Thanks.

I've seen pic of stickers on the Cat engine that says, "Max Elevation 8200 feet" or something close to that. It made me wonder how it would perform at or near that altitude on a regular basis.

the 900 series 5 tons had the cummins 6CTA 8.3L motors, not the NTCs. regardless, i would take this motor over the NTC anyday - much easier to get better power out of and much easier on fuel.

also, i think the trans in the 5T is a 5 spd auto.

out of the 2, i'd take the 5T hands down.

i thought about that after i posted; i have zero experience with an A0 model because they were phased out so long ago.

nonetheless, what's the truck for sale - an A0 or an A1 model? doesn't look like an A0 and it wouldn't make sense for it to be a "2001" A0 model. something doesn't add up w/ this truck.

Actually, only the M939A2 series had the 6CTA 8.3 Cummins. Both the M939 and M939A1 had the NHC250 Cummins.

I respect what MUDGUPPY is saying especially since I own three 6CTA-powered M939A2 series trucks and I love them (although the one on ebay is an M923A1). However, the 5 tonners are heavy. The deuces are obviously lighter and the CAT motor has power to spare even when configured as a 6x6. I can only imagine it would run like a raped ape with about six feet of chassis shorn off of its back (not to mention a lighter bed). My vote is for the M35A3.

(The guy has the wrong year on his M923A1. It might have been rebuilt in 2001, but none of the M939 series trucks were made after 1992.)

thanks for the correction, Bruce.

given those facts, i also vote for the deuce-A3. i'm kinda mixed, but i think i am voting more against the 5 ton than i am voting for the -A3. if you do bob the A3, i think it would look a lot better if it was lifted w/ 16.00's on it. i may think that way about everything, though.

the Cat motor should be plenty strong and could be easily uprated to get a little more out of it if needed. i'm just not sure about the tranny's in the A3's though. still, would be a sweet rig!!!
