who sells 24v generators

Guys best place to by new 24v generator?
any suggestions? or should I convert to alternator? is it a pain?

I have no Idea how many amps the current one is supposed to be pushing,
someone told me 100a but I don't know how they came up with that-cant read the data plate except for it was rebuilt at some depot in June of 71
and its 24v

You can buy a one wire delco alternator. They are easy to hook up just one wire to the battery. I have seen them on ebay or you can google "24 volt delco alternator" Very easy and much better than a generator.

huh looks like you can get one pushing 70 amps for around 100 bucks, this goes on the list when the generator goes out!

Also If I take this direction, what mods will I have to do besides
remove the cables to the regulator?
I would imagine all the cables would have to go correct? and system be re-routed?

Why not have your existing 24V generator rebuilt? Problems with generators are often no more serious than cleaning or replacing brushes. I have done it myself several times and it is normally quite easy.

I suppose I could rebuild it. I was actually going to call a guy that does this
and get a price from him vs. replacing. (I have never rebuilt one before)
Then ABLINN contacted me and gave their price for NOS.

I removed the cannon plug lead from the gen to vreg, and
found that apparently at one point someone removed it also
and when they reconnected it to the gen -it appears they "crushed the key"
on the gen and the 3 "sockets" inside were also mangled?
I really wish I could just test the output at the gen it self.
to see if the issue isat the unit and then test the vreg to see if the issue is there.
but I don't have the test set I guess for lack of a better term,
to do it. If i remove the + term from batteries when running the truck shuts down.

Look in MVM. There is a place that specializes in them...I forget their name

Look at the regulator tag, it will give you the current rating. I have a rebuilt and tested 25 amp regulator if it comes to that.

Alternators too are simple when you tear them down. The complexity comes in when you get into the rectifiers and regulators. But a lot of concept is the same.

It wouldn't hurt to inspect the generator you have and check the brushes. It could be a lot cheaper....

I've seen generators for sale in several areas.As for rebuilding one, as mentioned earlier it's not a big job. I had an extra that looked a little rough on the ouside, when opened, it was in great shape. Remember they are sealed units, and made to last just about forever.I did pick up new brushes just in case. They were good anyway. The brushes inside were the same size as the new brushes I picked up. Very little wear. I did a quick check on the bearings,they too were fine. Sometimes on E-bay they have rebuild kits.

update

Well after much fiddling around I sent it to be check and fixed.
It was a cheaper alternative and it did have some minor issues
so did the gen to vreg cable although it looked like new whomever played with it last destroyed the connector's in the cable and on the gen!!

The thing with the cannon plug must be a common problem (aka screw up) I took mine off today in preparation to pull the engine and found the same thing. At least now I know why it was not charging. I did straighten the pin out and noted when properly installed you only have a few threads showing at the connector. If you see 1/4 inch like I had you have a problem.

What I ended up doing after chatting quite a bit with Crane Truck
was pull the gen and cable and have it tested. The gen needed a bearing
but still had an output of 30amp +/-
the cable although Pvt Pile must have hooked it up at one point was still good
but the 3 connectors were twisted so bad we couldn't straighten them.
Next step -pulled the v reg and had it tested-BINGO no good.
So I bought a Solid state from a member, got a (new to me) gen to reg cable
looked like crap so I re insulated it -had that tested with the new reg and gen and all seems to be working fine .
I just gotta replace the gage now.
But Crane truck walked me through the entire process.
