Why a 5 ton instead of a 2.5 ton?

I have a friend with an M54, 5 ton multifuel with power steering and 1600x20 tires already installed, its awesome ! We are not that far away from you. Here's a pic. Its the OD truck, mine is the desert colored deuce behind.

The M54 is for sale. He wants an M925A2 to play with.

Test Drive!

By all meams try to test drive several trucks if possible.

Decide what you like the best and compute that with what you truly wish to
do with the truck. Are you going to just drive around empty, or due you intend to
work the truck and carry some loads. This all plays into deciding what you want.:)


Lots of us start with smaller vehicles and work our way up.

Others go for the gusto right away.

Myself, after two dueces(M207 & M109A3) I handed them down to my son for him
to use with out race truck projects and I drive my 5-Ton. It is like driving a small
block Camaro for a few years and them getting a big block Chevelle....:driver::driver:

pro 5 ton---steering with 2 fingers in mud or while towing, ground clearance, towing, most come with a winch, my insurance is 103.00 a year full coverage. watch the wmo and diesel mix, seen on here somewhere someone got fined for to much oil in the diesel, think they said it could only be 20% oil. don't know if that's state for feds, probably DOT. might be worth checking into, playing with these MV's if your worried about fuel mileage your in the wrong hobby. it cost me about 30 more dollars to go 100 miles than my buddies deuce for same ........CONS ??????????

If you have to worry about fuel costs, then maybe a MV is not the right vehicle for you. The one thing ALL MV's can do is suck the money from your fuel bill. :mrgreen:

I would defenitly have lockers front and rear [thumbzup]

I'm really liking the 5 tons, but I would like to get some fuel mileage if I were to run strictly diesel.
Someone stated there are planty of 2.5 tons out there, but I haven't seen too many from GL in my area. Ft Knox and Cambell dont seem to sell many vehicles. But they do have lots of office equipment :roll:

a locker in the front axle without locking hubs can lead to some strange handleing on the street and is hard on the axle.

An air locker is better in the front axle.

Like couple members mentioned come drive someones, and get a visual up close aspect of them and you can make more of a decision. You can test drive mine, but I know there is more members closer then me. Its how I got started and I got rid of my m35a2c for a m813a1. I def love the 5 ton more. If you are in the area I'm just east side of fort wayne ands trucks full of fuel for your test drive.

Will the box from a M820 fit a 2.5 truck? The M292 trucks seem pretty rare. The slide out sides would work for me if I have to give up some length.

Are the beds/boxes on both at 8' width?

Man, you just missed out big time!! Just a couple months ago Ft. Knox auctioned off something like 20 2.5 tons! I couldn't believe how many they were auctioning off all at once! I was tempted to bid on a couple even though they were so far from me just because I knew they would probably go for good prices with that many of them selling at once. GL goes in phases. You will go months without seeing anything, and all of a sudden there will be all kinds of the things on there.

The m292 vehicles have a longer wheel base in order to handle the length of the 17 foot box.

The box also weighs in a little over 6000 pounds so a 2.5 ton is going to struggle to pull that box. I believe they were meant for range control vehicles and hence seldom moved.

Amen, the front sprag in the 800 series leave at lot to be desired..

If you go 5 ton then go 900 series with an air shift front.

Even when I used to haul salt into the base a few years ago, I never saw a duece on the facility. I was amazed how close I was allowed to get to the tanks unescorted. But I'll assume I was on camera and would have attracted an armed mob if I started "exploring".

I've been reading this thread because I have been thinking about buying a 5 ton my dad uses to haul poles down right of ways, it's really fun to drive and the wife can actually drive it really well, but the insurance and fuel consumption might be an issue if we plan to drive it like we are planning.

I'm guessing the 5 ton would be similiar to the medium duty IH 4700 or is it a bit bigger?
Maybe the 2.5 is much like a F550?

There is NOTHING in the CIVILIAN world that compares to the MILITARY TACTIAL truck, that are DESIGNED to take an unbelievable ABUSE, and still get the driver to safety, I have seen trucks so shot up, banged up, over loaded, ect. that just looking at them you wonder how in HE!! it is still motivating under it's own power

The pic is of a truck after a right front tire BLOW OUT and ditch ride at 65 mph, the 73 m819 did the same thing at 60, went airborne, 200' tore up field, broken spring frame mount, ect
AFTER changing the tire, it was able to DRIVE under its own power a 1 1/2 mile to storage, then on/off the recovery trailer , then to my LZ, AGAIN all the time under it's OWN POWER and walked away UNSCRATCHED
