I'd bet they can do better selling them in bulk to other countries. At the very least, it'd be easier to sell, say, 50 at a time than 50 to individual sellers.

That said, I think that American bidders should have the right to bid for them, even if required to buy 50 at a time like other countries would for their military. Middlemen could then buy the lot of 50 and resell them one at a time.

Check MV Magazine issues 76 and 77 for the whole story on the USMC/UD "auction" of several hundred ex USMC M998's in late 1999. It is all legit, but Uncle Sam closed that loophole after that for M998's getting out into public hands.

With regards to Clark Truck and TNJ selling them to other countries, it was all approved by the US State Dept..

The Drivers Training Program at IASSI is part of the U.S. Army's initiative to field 8,500 humvees to the ISF in the next two years. So far, about 100 vehicles have been fielded. Maybe when they replace them, they will start giving them to state agencies, forest service, DNR, Fire departmanes, etc.

Then 20 years from now, we can buy them. But by then we will be wondering why we can't buy the army's hydrogen powered armored hover vehicle.

20 years from now I will probably dying from cancer and bed ridden before the M998s were ever to be released.
20 years is along time to be waiting.

This is why it is important to get a hold on what is available now. M35's are being released like the WWII vehicles were in the 50's.
These will proboably be the last Military Vehicles to go out to the public. I don't have room for one, but bought it anyway. Just a good investment. And for the prices; How can you go wrong?

I think it all goes back to "safety."

My guess is, too many people smashed their heads back in the 70s with gov-bid jeeps, trying to play Johnny Off-Roader, and the decision was, "No jeeps (or HMMWVs) for John Q. Public, because he'll hurt himself some more."

People do stupid crap and then the lawyers make sweeping decisions to protect the rest of us from ourselves.

Lawyers, Litigation, Lawsuits, and Liability. It's just "L" sometimes.

Guys tighten your belts because the Army is serching for even more vehicles to make up the new Brigades Modularity has created a demand for more trucks than we have in the inventory. Maybe we should not have sold off the 900 series trucks. I asked a force manangement guy and he did not think they would be call back any 800's or lower that is why M35A3's are coming out but I expect the market for 900 series to get tight
