wide open motor

I just picked up a Deuce and it has some sort of motor issue that I am guessing someone out there knows how to fix.

When you crank it up it runs wide open. I have heard guys tell of motors running away, but I don't think this is what is wrong with it as the pull switch still kills it and there is no smoke.

Moving the pedal has no effect on it. We were at the base, so we tried limited actions. We unhooked the throttle cable and backed off the idle screw completely. It would not run at all with the screw adjusted all the way out, but when we went back in a little bit with it it was wide open again.

I am guessing something is probably stuck in the fuel system, but we have never been into one and don't know where to start or where to look.

Check the return spring has not been removed. The fuel control lever must be held to the idle position or it will go to wide open throttle. See lower spring in attached photo.

I just finished repairing the same problem on a 1986 m35a2c i purchased at warner robins afb. Mine would crank and almost red line before slowly stopping.the great guys on this site help me until we found that the fuel control rod was gummed up. Was able to repair the ip/fuel control rod without removing the ip. Check out "clogged fuel system" under the duece forum from about 3 weeks ago. Member warthog provided some great pictures and advice.:-d
