What size truck ? M35a2 as winch drive is on left side ? Check shear pin for being broke first. What were you doing when winch stopped working ?

I was winching out my dodge as I was wenching the truck slid down the hill and gave the wench line a pretty good jerk. When I say left side that would be standing in front of the truck looking at the winch.

Winch=big reel mounted on your front bumper.
Wench=archaic term for a member of the female sex.

While it is possible to winch a wench out of a ditch, you can't wench a winch out of a ditch.

Not busting your chops but you do see the ramifications of misunderstandings...right?roflrofl

And I used to be an editor for our military magazine.....I just can't help myself.

I like to take off the band brake cover of any winch I have and check the condition. Some have a lot of rust built up. Remove the band, clean out inside and set the band very loose. Only tighten if using for raising or lowering load and only enough to hold load.

So Wait Wreckerman.......let me see if I got this straight.......
You can Winch a Wench but you can't Wench a Winch???
And If I did Winch a Wench, Which Way Would said Winch Wind the Wench???
When We Winch a Wench, Would We be Watching through the Windshield, Wondering What We Would Want for Winching a Wench????
And if Winching a Wench Would be What We Would Do.....then Would Wenching a Winch be a Waste or Winching or Wenching????
So tell us Wreckerman..........We Wanna KnoW!!!!!!

And as for your leaking and inoperstive Winch (or Wench) its probably a bad shear pin and a leaky seal...........

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That hurt!!!!!!:cookoo:

This is how misunderstandings (and black eyes) occur using certain words that sound alike but mean different things:

Bystander is inspecting a M816 which is being serviced by an rather large female mechanic.

Bystander remarks......."look at the big azzed winch on that wrecker".

POW!!!!!!!! Bystander gets black eye.

Gave you problem more thought. If bad seals are the only problem you can use John Deer corn head grease and not gear oil. If it was me with two people let the clutch out real real slow winch disengeged while number 2 stands by winch and watches for shaft movement. When it just begins to move listen for BAD noise and of corse stop if munching is heard. If it can spin and nothing is heard ingage winch let clutch out slow slow again and you might get lucky. Then just use the grease. I have it in one of mine and it works just fine.

The outher route would be drop input shaft and spin winch by wrench. This is a safet route for winch if it is FUBAR.
