Winch Questions....

Si I broke the engagement lever shaft on my winch this weekend and after I for home, pulled the winch out and tore it down. I had leaky seals everywhere so it was time to rebuild anyway. But then I remember seeing a winch for sale on a local for sale page on Facebook from last year and searched it and found it. Messaged them and they still had it and I picked it up for $300.

Picked it up tonight and have some questions. They said it came off a 5 ton, but it is a Garwood 10k winch just like my old one. I believe this may be a older one as it has the round knob for the drum release instead of the lever, through holes in the drum for the lock and the cable is still safety wired to the the drum and looks like it has never been un-spooled. It definitely has been on a truck and painted a couple times but was told there was no oil in it. Got it home and on the cherry picker and pulled the fill and drain plugs and this odd smelling black goo came slowly oozing out. Looking down through the holes, this goo is coating everything and there is no rust to be seen.

So my questions are do you think this is an older style winch and when assembled or rebuilt were the insides coated with a preservative? The goo coming out smells nothing like and type of 90wt or GL1.

It's just really old oil. Some of the old time gear oils had "whale oil" in them. I was a gear specialist for years and some of the differentials I rebuilt smelled like a rendering plant ! They stopped using "whale oil" in the early 1970's.

That must have been a rear mounted winch. It certainly wasn't front mounted. May have come off of a pipeline truck and they just thought it was a 5 ton. Lots of people confuse the deuces and old 5 tons.
Of course if it did come off of a deuce in rear mount configuration then the pto is on the wrong side... I'm curious now. Very interesting.

The brackets are from a 1950's GMC M135 or M211 deuce.

I'm almost 100% sure the winches were the same as an M35 on those 135's or 211's. Every one I saw looked the same with the only exception was the band brake housing was turned 90 degrees. After reading some of the posts by Gringeltaube, there were a couple different changes they made to the drum lock on these winches with the taper of the lock or something. Nothing that will effect its form, fit or function. They were just small changes that are neat to know if you like the technical part of it.
