I've searched but couldn't find an answer to this.

I started to take apart one of my winches today for a rebuild. I have removed the shift end, drum, brake band, and brake drum. It seems the bull gear wants to come off but can't because of the worm and it looks like the worm won't come out untill the bull gear is removed. What am I missing here? It looks like you may could turn the worm and screw it out of the bull gear but it seems the worm shaft doesn't want to move.

The screw shaft has to come out before the bull gear. You can tap on the ends of the screw shaft to help knock the bearings loose from the case. Just use a brass hammer or something that won't mushroom the shaft. Don't worry about it binding against the bull gear,it will turn with it as long as there isn't something that's stopping it from rotating. I'll see if I can dig up a pic from when mine was apart.
