Wobbly input shaft

I posted this same question buried deep in a tangentially related thread - so I am pulling it out to see if I can get some help.

I am doing a clutch job on my deuce, and in pulling the tranny I noticed I have quite a bit of wobble or play in the input shaft, ~1/16" in fact. When I yanked the input bushing I noticed it was quite worn, consistent with the play in the input shaft.

I pulled the tranny apart, and all the parts appear in good order. I was expecting the roller bearings to be damaged or loose, but they were tight and clean with no pitting or deformation. The input bearing was also in good shape - spinning freely but without any lateral movement. The tip of the mainshaft appeared clean, round and in good shape with no scarring or deformation. I couldn't find anything readily apparent as a problem.

Is this much play in the input shaft normal? If not, where should I be looking for the culprit? Any help is appreciated.

Some one with more MV knowledge can correct me but on civilian truck trans iv worked on they all seem to have more movement in the input shaft then one would think . 1/16 dont sound like a lot to me . The bearing or bushing in the flywheel holds the input steady .

No tranny noise while idling in neutral. The only noise it made was when the clutch was engaged, and I know the T/O bearing is bad (that's what kicked the whole thing off.) I also found I couldn't shift into 1st or R, I attributed that to my bad clutch though.

Cheers guys - I feel much better about the whole thing now that some experienced folks have weighed in with their thoughts on it.
