year of manufacture of a M923

My name is Lt. D.L. Wells of the Pender County Sheriffs Office in Burgaw, N.C. The Marine Corps donated a M923 6x6 to a local police department and they have in turn, given it to us. We have had I cleaned up and painted. We are now trying to find out what year it was manufactured in so we can deal with the DMV.

I called AM General and they advised they did not have the serial numbers broken down into years, so they suggested I make contact with your association for possible help.

The truck is a plain M923, no A1 or A2, no winch and no papers. We know it went to the Marines. The serial number is 530022.

Is there any way you know of to determine the year it was manufactured?

Is there any more info on the data plate? Unit #, Contract date, etc

What is the Vin on the frame? Does it match the Data Plate?

You should see a # that starts with C523 and I think it should have 9 total digits? Guys correct me if I am wrong. The serial # on the Data Plate inside the cab on the Passenger side should be your VIN #. But that same C523 number should also be on the frame of the truck. Located on the Drivers side in back of the steering box, may be covered a bit by the mud guard, should be about 2-3 inches down from the top edge of the frame rail. You will have to scrape or wire brush paint off the frame to read it. Maybe not if it is a good engraving. Hope this helps you. Let us know how you make out and post some pictures of the truck when you get a chance.

Not sure it matters. Just tell them whatever year you like. My best guess is that it is late 90's. Most 1983's are C523.....1990's C525....

I'm sorry and I'm at a little loss and skeptical. The reason I say that, and take absolutely no offense but, why did they contact you? You don't have to answer that, I just really am scratching my head on that one. David Doyle would have contacted me directly. And the fact they are contacting someone in MD for a truck in NC? It makes me wonder and maybe I'm just being too suspicious.

Now, with that said, I will make a stop tomorrow to see if I can get a contact to get this specific truck identified. I would prefer to work with the Sheriffs office so if you would, PM me their email and I hope it is a local gov or some form of PD type email, otherwise.......

Also I am absolutely floored by the folks that say "make it up". That is NOT the right way to handle this.

I understand when dealing with normal civillian vehicles that the year it is made is part of the vin and that's pretty much set in stone. When it comes to these vehicles if it was important to the military they would have made sure the date was clearly marked on the data plate where it says delivery date. If there is no date and no clear reference for the date I see no problem with making up your own date as long as it is in the range of years that the vehicle in question was produced.

How is it illegal. The government is selling off vehicles and if they cannot tell you what year it was made and they are the original owners, how can they expect anyone else to. Even if the date is marked on the vehicle it is a delivery date probably when a unit received it. It is not a date of manufacture the military did not make the vehicle only the manufacturer can state and mark a manufacture date on a vehicle. We are talking about vehicles that are for the most part all at least 20 years or older. It's not like someone is taking a vehicle they know is a 2008 and making it a 1984.

The delivery date stamped on the data plate is the date it was delivered to the DOD. Not the date a unit gets it. Some its,s can sit in depots for a long time before getting issued to a unit.

Some data plates have the date clearly marked on them like someone took the time to stamp them nicely and some look like my 8 year old could have done a better job.

I'm sure one of the police officers on here could cite the code. Bottom line is, it is illegal. This has been covered in numerous threads before everytime someone says "Just slap any ole date on her". It's obvious the Sheriffs Dept isn't comfortable with doing what is easy and illegal or they'd have already done it. If you want to split hairs about build date versus acceptance date, then by all means....but I suspect it has something to do with the fact it is a contract to build, not a build to sell and the fact that the numbering (serialization) is dependent upon validation, verification and acceptance criteria (oh that class I took came in handy). In the meantime, I think more than a couple folks on here will keep handing you shovels, some will sit in the easy chairs with umbrella drinks to enjoy the show, and others will be eagerly waiting for the completion of that hole to China.

Can you look up a contract date and use that then? The contract number is on the data plate and if that is the best legal reference that can be found then it should be fair to use.

C523s are M923s and M923A1s, C525s are M925s and M925A1s and are all AM General.

1990 trucks will be BMY trucks and will have a serial number that is something like 23/XXXXX or 1001XXXXX.
