Yet another starter broken thread.

I know no one wants to read another broken starter bolt thread but I have one that 2 days’ worth of searching has not answered.

While doing routine inspection the other day I discovered a missing starter bolt, looked up on the block and the bolt from the support bracket to the block was gone as well. I was hopeful that it had just backed out and fell off, but when the new bolt would not thread all the way in I knew it was broken.

I dropped the starter, used my Craftsman Screw Out reverse drill thingy, and got the piece out, easy day! Problem is when I dropped the starter I was hit in the forehead by a tiny chunk of the starter housing. It broke off right at the edge where the starter mates to the block. Everything else is 4.0. Question is can I run it like this with 2 good new starter bolts, and the support bracket in place or am I at risk of breaking the block?
Thanks
Rich

Seen it before. Either have the nose cone repaired (aluminum casting, easily welded) or replaced. Otherwise the bolts will continue to break.

The 27MT (direct drive) nose nose can be found at NAPA for about $16. No need to chance breaking the block.

It is about a 1/8 square chip here, but in the surface that sits against the block. Warthog, thanks for setting me straight about the bolt holes being in the nose cone.

Its the direct drive still. If I can't track one down, I will have it welded. I have access to excellent aircraft certified welders at work, so that might be better then a new Chinese POS....

Thanks Warthog, I saw those, but didn't pay to much attention as I did not have the nose cone as the problem. No luck at 3 Napa's here in the valley, foundone at an auto-electric shop 45 miles north of here for 22 bucks.

Thanks again for all the help

Well made the hour drive to Fresno and got me a nice new nose cone... But I think it is the wrong one, it has the big opening for the Bendix gear, I think that is for the manual transmision not he auto, will it work? I have read a couple threads where it was asked, but never saw a yes or no answer.

Big mouth or small mouth. They both work the same for your needs. Now if you had a manual transmission you would need the big mouth starter.
