Help! No brakes in m35a2!

Hi everyone on SS just joined up here recently during my research into the M35A2 i just bought one a couple days ago and i have been looking everywhere and i cant find a solution to my problem so here it is ...i was driving(not needing the brakes) and if felt really sluggish and bogging i at first thought it was bad fuel and a couple miles down the road i noticed all 6 of the brakes smoking and i didnt have brakes and the temp was reading around 390 degrees Fahrenheit on the brakes... i think it is the master cylinder but i dont know.. any suggestions would help thanks

A faulty airpack can cause this.

Welcome to SS.

It sounds like your brakes are stuck on. Another cause can be the master cylinder is not leting the fluid flow out of the brake lines and cylinders. First set the parking brake and chock the wheels. Then open one of the bleed valves and let some fluid out. See if the truck roll freely.

I think he meant he was driving and did not have reason to apply the brakes.
Also draging brakes won't necessarily show up on an pre-inspection, but only after driving.

But you are correct that the brake system need to be completely checked and repaired before the truck is driven any more.

I'm sure he meant that he did not need to apply the brakes but much as I may catch grief for it I drive one of my trucks all the time without brakes. No, I don't drive it on the road.

Did the brakes release when the truck does not have any airpressure? If so, you can figure the airpack.

If not, it is the master most likely.

The first thing to do is familiarize yourself with the brake system in the Operator's manual
TM 9-2320-209-10-1

Then you can review the troubleshooting section in
TM 9-2320-209-20-2-2

The repair information for the brake system is found in
TM 9-2320-209-34-2-1

The TMs are available here in the resource section of else at

Also check the free play on the brake pedal. I think it wants to be about 1/2 to 1 inch at the pedal, check the TM to be sure. If there is none, the master cylinder will not release pressure.

Does it have the correct brake fluid in it ? and not D.O.T. 5 and D.O.T. 3 mixed ?
Has the break fluid even been checked?

When someone's first post is about brakes, it screams that they got a truck and took off in it with no reguard to safety. Most folks here sent him in the right direction to find the cause. He asked for help and was informed where it was. I don't know where the issue is.

While I agree, we do need to try to be "gentle" with people.

Perhaps we all could "tone it down" a touch.(including myself).
