Oil Sampling Petcock

My Deuce engine has a petcock mounted on the side of the oil filter/cooler housing. When the motor is running, if you crack that petcock open, you get a nice stream of oil. I presume that this is intended for obtaining a sample of the oil for testing without having to drain the sump. Also, it would be a 'clean catch' sample, ideal for testing.

My question is whether it is acceptable to use this port for a bypass filter and/or a preluber. For use to feed a bypass filter, I am not sure if this would be 'robbing' too much of the flow. For a preluber, I don't know if the pressure will go to the right place.

Just stating a curiosity of mine...not trying to be a smartazz here, but if you use that port as a "preluber" , what are you prelubing? the engine? 'Cuz wouldnt that kind of defeat the purpose if the engine has to be running for you to get oil for a preluber?

I might not have a good grasp on what your talking about, so if thats the case, just call me an igit and ignore me lol.

I don't know what would be prelubed, because I don't know where that petcock sits in the circuit. If it is downstream of the crank, for example, I might just be prelubing the valvetrain, which is the great so what.

I would not be drawing oil out of that port. I would be pumping it back in. That's your confusion on the issue. The preluber would have to draw oil from somewhere. I am just curious as to what else - besides sampling the oil - that particular fitting can help with.

There are different types of preluber's. really simple one is basically a sealed tank that you let the engine fill with oil under normal oil pressure. Then you close it before shutting the truck off so it wont bleed down and then open it when you are about to start to pressurize the oil system with oil.

More sophisticated systems use a electric or sometime air powered motor/pump to suck oil from either the oil pan or a reservoir and inject it into the engine to raise the oil pressure before starting.

It's great for oiling down your wife's or girlfriend's (or both) carrofl
Don't ask how I know.
Are you saying you oiled down you wife's car and your girlfriend's car at the same time? If that's the case you've got bigger problems than a little spilled oil. rofl
