Does anybody know how much play (in and out) there is supposed to be on the input shaft? Before I put some new bearings on my input shaft in my truck, the input shaft would move in and out under load (not up and down). I never quite understood why the helical gears on the input shaft would not be supported with tapered bearings instead of regular ball bearings. It seems like these would be better... but then again, i didnt not design it and there must be a reason. I think i still have some movement in and out on the input shaft but not as much before. The original reason for me taking my transfer case apart was bearing failure on the inputshaft low range gear.
