I knew of this process from a friend who worked for BNSF but never thought to apply it to anything I was doing. I guess I thought using heat was silly short of really big things. Well the 923 is big right? Working alone, getting that hub into my press and positioned was just not going to happen. Even if it did I would still be scrambling to come up with cups the right size to press. Long story short, races in the freezer, torch on the hub and it fell together all on its own. If you are faced with the prospect of trying to tap your races in by hand give this a try instead. Even if you have the proper press and cups you might just try it anyway for your own amusement.

That how we did the bearings on the road wheel hubs on the m1.

Stick a tanker bar in the exhaust grill, put hub on it, put tank in tac idle and wait a few mins.

Take hub off drop in bearing and pour water on it to set it.

Easy peasy.

Yep, everything new is old but pick yourself up a cheap little
"Rosebud" tip for your OXY ACET rig and you will thank me.

An old aerospace bushing/bearing trick that works well is a block of dry ice in a can of alcohol.
Submerge your race for a couple of minutes and install.
You might not even need the torch.

OK, it takes a lot to impress me. I'm impressed! That is indeed cool. I'll definitely try it.

Thanks!

I was worried it would get brittle but now that I have done it I see even brittle you are not going to be driving it so it wold be fine. I will try that next time for sure.

There are tons of installs we do that require liquid nitrogen per the (insert large airplane mfg.) specifications.
The alcohol/dry ice method wont shrink it as much, but dry ice can be had at most grocery stores or fire extinguisher shops.
