How do I ask if another member recognizes a pic of my Genset? I have what I believe is a 15KW Diesel Genset with apparently low hours, but has not been run in many a year. I cannot find the ID plate since it was completly disassembled , prior owner was planning on sandblasting and painting and never got around to it. I would like to get the model number so I can get her back to work with TM's etc. Engine man. is Hercules and was built in 1968. Model number D198ER mil spec no. MIL-E-112766

This plate was found below the starter motor on the exhaust side of the engine:

SPEC: D198ERX31 Model: D198ERSerial#: 3212877 Date of MFG: 3/22/68
Bore: 3-3/4 Stroke: 4 - 1/2 Disp: 198 Cu. IN. 4 Cycle
Max Cont. Speed: 2000 Max. Net. Cont. BHP: 40
Maintain Oil Pressure: 20 Firing Order: 1-2-4-3
Tappet Clearance Exh: 015 Int: 015
See: DD Series Maintenance Manual
Military Spec: MIL-E-112766

HERCULES ENGINES,INC.

thanks

Looks like a predicessor to the MEP-004a, a large part of the reason the MEP generator standardzation program was created was the logistical nightmare they faced in the vietnam era trying to support hundreds if not thousands of different models of generators as the DOD had no unified generator procurement system.

Probably ask a Mod to move this thread to the Generators section ;-)
I would do so Gladly... if I knew how!!!

Looks like someone already did... talk about being on the ball. Thanks... I just found my post under Auxilliary Eq. As Rossanne, Rossanna Dana on SNL used to say... Never Mind!

Engine runs like a sewing machine (a loud one) but engine has a gizmo (lack or better term) that sticks out the side of the fuel injection pump that has 3 wires going to it... wires are cut, and have no clue what its purpose was... looks almost like a sideways distributor, but has 3 12 ga wires coming out that are cut. label is pretty faded. Any ideas as to a wiring diagram for this unit?

You should have a "Stanadyne" injection pump. Those wires are for engine shutdown. Some need voltage to open the valve, some need voltage to shut off the valve. It just depended on what the use of the unit was for. If it was a standby unit then when power went off, the unit would start. Yours must have been a stand by unit, since it runs with the wires cut.

Thanks Rusty, but the more I look at it it seems to be more of an rpm controller or a limiter-after cleaning it a bit, it says... synchro-? and just below it label says... speed sensitivity set ... here is a pic... sure would love to have a wiring diagram...

OK I have not seen a unit like yours. The injection pump is run out of the distributor hole, not on the other side by the timing gear. Who is the pump manufacturer anyway ?

OK... got engine working... well... power generating well as well (hair stainding on end attests to that.... but seems like the conptrolloer is crapola.... is there a way to up date the controler to a newer amd "better" digital "unit... after I caught my breath, the best I can figure is I had somewhere between 240 an 480 flowing through my aging bones... whew!!! but windings look good and motor looks right

The Jolt with my name on it hasn't been made yet -:)
There are those who have been jolted, and those who will be jolted. However no one completes the game without being jolted! :p

BTW, for everyone/anyone: there are two versions of the D-198 4 cylinder engine. One version has the injection pump on the intake side mounted in the hole low center, facing up. The newer version has the injection pump mounted on the exhaust side facing rearward. Same pump, different mounting. (The original under the intake presented issues with maintenance because the injection lines had to cross over the top of the engine!)

Thanks "PeterD" for the info. My engine is the newer version then with the injection pump on the exhaust side. Now if I can just find rebuild parts for the injection pump !

That injection pump is a very common design. I don't think you'll have problems getting it rebuilt, or finding parts if you want to rebuild yourself. I'd call Jerry or Linda Biro at Hercano <sp?> Propulsion in Ohio. He'll have the parts.

BTW, son found the pump parts in EEEEEb... you know the rest, pm me and I can foward you the source... it seems it was also used in JD tractors... etc. Plentiful... I am just wondering now if I pull it out, how can I be sure that I time it correctly going back... I have an issue that even though engine runs well when running, if you shut it off and fire it off 10 seconds later, it seems to need to wind up as much as it did the first time...

plus, there is a check valve in the return line coming from the pump that keeps accumulating crud... other sites have stated that is very common when one of the main seals goes out or is on the way out...

BTW anyone out there knowledgeable enough to advise me on how to replace the old corroded 40+ year old voltage reg with a newer variety? I have removed the "hickey" that was driven by the belt off the right side (it was making bearing noise) and will replace it with a 24V alternator. That "hicket had one wire going to the Field terminal in the genset and probably was part of the voltage regulation system. If I energize the F+ terminal w 24V+ I get 246VAC out of the genset. so we seem to be working OK, just need regulation...

Thanks

Peter, do you have the phone number for Jerry Biro ? I thought I had it, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere. Thanks.
