I can never figure out how people think this system is complicated. It's like two seperate charging systems wired in series. It is no more difficult to troubleshoot than a standard 12v system except there duplicate pieces. Not only does it have a lot of power ability but if alternator one dies, you can simply swap it out for number two to get home.[/Quote

A couple of years ago my son was going to a local college for diesel mechanics. I had him take my 1009 to check out the compression etc, basically give him something to do for lab. The instructor there looked at the charging system and told him I had done some modifications to it and he, the instructor, said it couldn't work. My son brought it home and told me that. After I came down from the ceiling my son and I had a little 24 volt Electrical 101 on it. I still can't believe someone who's supposed to be teaching this stuff had no idea. I'm not the brightest crayon in the box but I figured it out.

Why is it that Wreckerman started this thread and has not posted again? Did he get kidnapped by possums? :wreckerman893:

When it comes to higher education, it seems to be hit or miss with instructors. Has nothing to do with age, background, experience, etc. You either get some real geniuses or garage drop outs. I've met some really talented instructors in my day but also some dubs that shouldn't be working with cars or kids.

Either way, the instructor should have did some research or pulled up a wiring diagram before making such assumptions. A good technician should be able to fix anything including the Space Shuttle with the right manual and toolbox :)

A few reasons:

(1) The Boss Lady is working me like a rented mule on a farm project we have to have finished by the 15th to get our gooberment charity money.

(2) It's Summertime in Alabama and I have to work outdoors where it's hotter than two rats f**king in a wool sock. It's also humid and the bugs work a 24 hour shift. The ones that don't bite the ell out of you just buzz around and annoy you.

(3) On my best day I'm a lousy mechanic where electronics are concerned. I'm dreading crawling under that wretched invention of the devil to work on it. I priced a new starter and I won't have to sell a kidney but it ain't cheap either.

(4) I'm hoping someone dumber than I am will come by and buy it for a hair over what I have in it.

(5) I'm still kicking myself for not listening to the little voice inside my head that was telling me to "LEAVE THE DAMMED CUCV ALONE".

Wreckerman out.

Edit:

I just clicked on the link that Frank8003 posted and I might just be able to muddle through it since there are pictures.
If I get caught up I may tackle the job in a day or two.

Call me if you run into trouble. Been there done that. I did most of the important mods on mine and they are not complicated. I can help with locating certain parts cheap. You are more than capable of doing the DH mod. A chimp can do it. (At least you are skinny so reaching under the dash should be easy.

Swap the relay and starter and you significantly reduce your odds of other major issues.

Right now it's sitting out in the driveway biding it's time before our next battle. I detected a evil glint off it's windshield today but I prob won't work on it for a few days.

I'll call NAPA tomorrow and see if they have the part in stock and then check with Advance Auto to see if they have the starter (my kid works there so I get a discount).

Maybe by Wednesday I can work up the motivation to try my hand at the infamous Doghead modification.

Just had the same thing happen to our M1009, looked into the doghead mod only to find no starter relay in the truck, it has a push button momentary switch instead, problem ended up being a bad starter solenoid.

It only explodes the starter, melts any associated wiring, and leaves you stranded when the relay fails...not a big deal. Not like the ignition key shuts off killing you ;)

Its a known problem and if you haven't fixed it immediately upon purchase you are either "driving a grenade with the pin out" or "running bare back". Whatever description works best!
Wow. Sounds just like the ex-wfe. <shudder>

Oh the horror, the horror of it all. aua

I'll prob pull the starter and take it to the local old school starter and alternator guy in town. He has a rep for being good and reasonably priced. If he can't repair it I'll buy one. I looked under the dash and didn't see that plate in the picture but I didn't look real hard. Eric...if you read this please PM me your phone number.

I had the same thing, WITH the Doghead mod. Turned out it was missing the pinion retainer. This keeps the pinion from bashing the nose cone, with it missing it would hang up over-center, keeping the solenoid engaged. It finally broken the nose cone.

I welded the nose cone back together, then went to the local starter/alternator rebuilder and got the retainer plus circlip. Cost me the time and materials for welding, got the retainer assembly for free. Welding the aluminum was fun, limited access to weld inside but I managed. TIG for aluminum requires heavy electrode and torch, it just didn't want to fit. But I managed to stick the tungsten far out to get it.

During the starter run-on, it got smoking hot, not glowing. That was just the grease getting cooked, the windings in both rotor and field looked fine, insulation wise. Not black/brown and bubbly. Commutator held together for the abuse. I overhauled it just to be sure.
