First, I've moved your thread to the 5 ton section.

Second, the battery is a 6TL battery. You can pick them up at NAPA, interstate battery locations, or most any heavy equipment parts place.

Third, you can alternatively swap over to group 31 civilian batteries. Course, this should be done in matching sets. Both as a pair for 24v and in banks of 24v like the M939 series.

Replacing one battery is a bad idea. Assuming it has the four original batteries I would pick two that have equal voltage and lose the other two. Being that you are in Florida you don't need the extra amperage that four batteries has. If you want to have four batteries then someone else here can direct you where you can get the original TL type batteries.

Don't just go by a multimeter as far as the voltage, if you have the type of batteries that you can check the water then check the gravity.

If not load test them to pick out the best two.

I also recommend switching to group 31s. I currently have two marine group 29s in my 818 and it works just fine turning the 250 over.

I'm new to 5-tons (picked up today) and have a deuce. I could only get a solenoid click when trying to start it but it started right up when slaved. Drove 25 miles home with the voltage gauge in the green. After getting home, I shut it down and tried to restart it shortly after that and was back to clicks and no start. I'm thinking that it's battery time but 4 batteries is a new world after the deuce 2. Besides testing for 2 of the best, is it just easiest and best to just buy 4 new batteries? Are all 4 used in starting the engine? Are Optimas the best? the Optima I bought for my Wrangler only lasted about 3 years. Thanks.

First thing I do when getting something new to me is to clean all the battery posts and clamps to shiny metal. Start with the negative (ground) and leave it off until you get all the others done. Prevents blowing holes in battery box when wrench slips.
While I am at it, I clean the grounds and follow the wires to the starter, cleaning at every connection.
Saved me lots of trouble and batteries.

Before tossing batteries, slow charge them and then load test them.

For the new guys...

These trucks will run on 2 standard size 12V truck / marine type batteries w/o issue
all day long. I have 2 Sears B-14 Marine type batteries in front of my 400HP Cummins and
it spins FAST during starts in warm temps. Your little 5Ton is only 250HP. (But I have
a 5 Ton too so.......)

The 6TL batteries are VERY expensive and most guys just replace them w/ whatever
is available.

BUT, if you want it AS ISSUED, you need to start reading the TECHNICAL MANUALS (TMs).
MANY if not all of them are available for a small fee, ............HA! Just kidding, they are
FREE here on this WONDERFUL forum.

Go look for them, a literal prize for the first guy who finds them here!

Thanks for the great tips and I'll have time to clean all connections while waiting the 30 days for the SF49 form. Reading the TM's are invaluable but chatting with the experts is more fun...and WAY faster!

3 out of 4 of the 2008 Hawker HASP-FT batteries tested bad, so I plan to replace all 4. A quick check at O'Reilly's auto parts store shows they have series 31 batteries but with different dimensions and terminal post placement. Does anyone know if a battery of the same configuration that drops-in and is held in place with the battery hold-down brackets? Thanks!

Check interstate batteries and see if they have any blemish 6tl batteries.

Group 31s would work and you would only need 2.

Battery he down would have to be tweaked a little.

You could also go with the optima yellow top and use the tray adaptor to use the current hold downs.

Many have recommended the two of the 8D batteries that seem to have the same high cranking amps as the Hawkers. Any brands or model numbers anyone recommend? Are they all vented wet cells or are there any sealed batteries? At a glance I see Interstate 8d-MHD and Duralast 8D for $200. each. Thanks!

I threw 2 Sears B-14, Group 27 battery's in
front of my 400HP Cummins NTC400 and
it spins over FAST and no issues at all FWIW.

Don't be so quick to toss the Hawkers, since they can often be brought back from the dead. Search here on threads about Hawker batteries and how to charge them. I had 4 with the volts so low they wouldn't take a charge from a smart charger, but put 2 of them on 1.5 amp and 2 amp chargers for 2 weeks, they then took a full charge. Just those two previously dead batteries now start a M931A2 with no problems. I'm currently slow charging the other two.

What year were your Hawkers. Mine are 2008. I'll give it a try but may have to resort to new batteries to hit the road sooner. I'd like to receive some recommendations for Group 31 batteries that people like. Thanks.

I'd like to try and recover those batteries on my special battery charger. It is the one the military uses to charge those...HD something or other. It's part of my common 1. I'll be coming through that way in another 45 days.

I have taken 6TLs out and went through a complete desulfate process and staying on a slow charge. Not all will recover , but I might save 3 out of 4 most of the time. An Optima battery will not desulfate. When they go , they're gone ! High cranking amps is a must. I bought 4 truck batteries at Sam's Club , think they were series 49, around $110 ea , 3 yr warranty. I know I could have just done 2 in series , but 4 is better if you're going to run something off one ( like music , 12v )
