Hey Guys,
This is Tactical Nomad. I am the guy with the M923A2 that I'm having trouble with. Robert (Those Military Guys) has been a great help over the phone, but I am having issues with my 5-ton.
I have owned many Ford 6.9L & 7.3L 3/4 & 1-ton diesels, and I have experience with the Cummins N14 (Red Top) engines (when I drove long haul), but I am at a loss on this one, both with the engine and trans.
When I bought the truck I drove it 3 hours home only able to go 40mph. Once home, I drove it around a couple of times and started having trouble with it. I contacted Robert and together, we started to resolve some of the issues that I was having.
1. PROBLEM: Oil in the air filter canister SOLUTION: Removed clogged air filter.
2. PROBLEM: Truck would not reverse SOLUTION: Figured out that the trans was filled with ATF instead of 15W 40 Diesel oil.
3. PROBLEM: Truck's top end speed 40mph SOLUTION: Turn-up fuel pump and star wheel (thought this would solve problem, but no, still only 40 mph?!)
4. PROBLEM: Truck would not start SOLUTION: Changed original 07-15-89 dated main (large) fuel filter, & fuel/water separator filter (started after change; still
only 40 mph?!)
5. PROBLEM: Oil smoke cloud pouring out of blow-by hose SOLUTION: ????????
One problem I was having was that I was told that the engine held 5+2 gallons of oil instead of 5.2 gals of oil (5 gals + 2 qts.), so I was initially running 7 gallons of oil which was dripping out of the blow-by hose as I drove, and pouring out when I stopped. Since then, I have drained the oil down to its correct level, but I am still getting the horrendous cloud of smoke billowing out of the blow-by tube, but no oil dripping or pouring out. Although the oil cloud does produce an oil film on the windshield of any following vehicles (I know, very James Bond, LOL!)
With the trans., I can get the truck up to 45 when it shifts into 5th gear, then the truck starts dropping down to 40 and downshifts to 4th gear, and the process repeats itself the entire time I drive it. To even achieve 45 I have to hold the pedal down to the floor hard with my foot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Nomad
