I've been welding for a long time and never seen or heard of anyone welding stainless to mild steel at all, much less with a mig. I'm not saying your wrong, I don't know everything. Just never heard of it.

Yep ... I can back it up too. Necessity being the mother she is, I've done a couple stainless to mild steel weld jobs. No gas ... I used flux cored wire. All of them turned out OK too.Welder here, can confirm. Best solution? Nope, but works just fine.
Yes the welds will rust and they will be brittle. I would never suggest this technique for anything structural. But, we are talking about holding a muffler in place.Yeah I just verified myself. To my defense I've never been an exhaust welding technician other than on my own vehicles. I've always just done fab work with mild steel. Apparently it holds fine, the welds just rust so it needs to be painted.
What is this? I now have about 10 coworkers looking over my shoulder...Congratulations. There's no cure, you know:
