M35 steering box seals?

Does anyone know of a source or p/n for the output shaft seal on the M35 steering gearbox? I can get the gasket but haven't found any seals.

I saw some on a popular auction site. Can't remember if they had the part # listed. If you can try removing the seal and taking it to a bearing warehouse and see if they can match it.

You could do what I did and just run corn head grease in there. Changing the seal isn't too bad but getting to the seal to change it is a pain.

I've heard of the corn head grease. How long have you been running it in there? Any problems with it?

I've had it in there for I'd say around 3 years. No problems that I've encountered. It does still stay wet a little around the shaft but it doesn't run down on the frame like it did with oil in there.

No way I'd do that job without just going ahead and rebuilding it. The parts are cheap-Memphis has the rebuild kits and they sell them on a popular internet site.

Power steering!!! What a nice dream!!! I need to find a source for some of that "Money" everyone's raving about. Till then, I have to settle for replacing the seals and keeping the armstrong steering system.

Bringing this thread back, but does any one have the P/N for out put seals? My truck is leaking bad now, and my Dad's work has access to Ross Steering Rebuild kits, seals etc. so having a number would be quicker, but if not we will try just using the cast numbers on the box to start, pull the steering box if needed.

I will reiterate what I said 2 years ago" Almost every M44 steering box I've encountered is loose. No way I'd put a seal in one without doing a rebuild.

I've done 3 rebuilds so far and totally agree with "clinto" . Rebuild the thing or go power steering but don't waste your time and money just throwing seals at it.

Thanks guys, like I said my dad had access to a bunch of Ross parts so if it needs a rebuild, then I should be able get the correct parts

From the ORD 9 SNL G-742 parts manual; Fig. 14-1, item BB: Part No. 500044, SEAL, oil, type ML, 1-3/8 x 1.832 x 7/16.

Now, 7/16" would be extra-wide, for that size of seal at least. Best if you could get an OEM repair kit, which would include the (mil.spec)seal.
Otherwise the closest you will find in the civilian world are:

• TIMKEN #330480N (1-3/8 shaft Ø x 1.832 seal O.D. x 3/8" W, single lip)
• TIMKEN #323138 (1-3/8 shaft Ø x 1.832 seal O.D. x 1/4" W, double lip)
• SKF #13537 (1-3/8 x 1.828 hsg. bore x 5/16" W, single lip) ---> NAPA

No, it just says #323138 "provides a compatible interchange". It probably is more popular but it's a single-lip style and only 1/4" width. And made of Nitrile (S) instead of Polyacrylate (N)


The #330480N is a much better option IMHO; unless someone wanted to use two of the thin ones, with the outer one reversed - its lip pointing outwards...?

Gerhard, I downloaded the Timken seal catalog and according to it the seal #330480N is a single lip seal. The seal #323138 is a double lip seal and is used in over 960 automotive steering gears.
I received my seals today and there is an extra outer lip on it. It is also new manufacture not old NOS like the surplus stores will have.
