Purpose of the Reverse Gear Shifter shaft that sticks out the transmission cover?

I was crawling around under my truck and noticed a nice shiny metal linkage sticking out of the rear of the transmission cover. It is item #16 in this picture:

It is designated as the following in TM 9-2520-346-34P:

2520-00-752-1097 7521097 19207 SHAFT,STRAIGHT:REVERSE GEAR SHIFTER
It looks like this is an unused linkage for some kind of add-on item that is actuated when in reverse gear. Anyone know if it was used on our trucks, or was a generic option added just because?

It was originally used before their shift Sprague transfer case

It would appear Doghead is hitting the sauce again. Moderators may want to gently remind him that SS members are expected to scribe their thoughts into coherent sentences.

That shaft is attached to linkages going to the Sprag transfer case. Although generally discontinued in the 1970s, I can vouch that the sprag transfer case was being reused and rebuilt until at least 1985, or at least the National Guard service trucks of that vintage still used them.

Was/still am, posting with phone. I used the talk to text feature, then tried to edit it. I did not have my glasses on either. Was not drinking!
