I notice the inner wheel bearings are wider than the outer ones.

During a hub flip do the bearing or races get switched around? I see no mention of it in the instructions. My best guess says no, but I want to be certain.

No, I should have been clearer. The bearings and races need to be swapped from one side of the hub to the other. Used bearings and races should always stay matched although not everyone does that. The spindle will only receive the bearing with the bigger inner diameter. With that said, I'm sure there are folks who have left the races where they started and had no issues.

If you are careful removing the cups you will have no trouble reusing them.

The races can be reused, takes a lot of finesse to get them out with out damage. Heat the hub to about 200* F. Wear good gloves and tap them out evenly. To re-install, heat the hub and put the race in the freezer for a couple hours. Once again,
finesse is the key, no gorilla tactics. It will slip right back in. Keep everything clean. Make sure the race is fully seated.

If I have to seat a race that I don't have a driver for, I use a heavy brass drift and take my time.

Thats why you keep old races around when they are bad. Grind them down a tad on the outside and use them to tap in the new ones.

Another trick for the old race is just cut a relief in it. Band saw or wiz wheel. They tap right out after seating the replacement race.

Are you doing this on a Deuce or a 5 ton?

I was just looking at new bearings I bought for the 5 ton rear and they have the same outer races. The 596 bearing is the larger diameter, so is the inner and the 593 then would be the outer. Both use the 592a race. That's when I realized flipping was even possible since the race is the same.

So now I'm buying a deuce A3 (with a tranny problem). I'll have a truck pick it up next week.

I want to change to dual 11.00 on the rears from my singles.

I read that the CTIS on 5 tons is the problem if the hubs are flipped. Since my A3 has CTIS, can I flip the hubs to accommodate the duals and still retain my CTIS?

Forget the bandsaw...never happen on a hard race. Cutoff wheel on a 4 1/2" grinder...can do.

Hub flips are a fun prodject. So easy a 11 year old can do it. Hahaimage.jpgand yes the bearing and race swap location in the hub so that they keep there original location on the spinal on both 5 ton and deuce. They will not physical fit in the wrong race.

There is no wrong race. On the 5 ton they are both 592a. I'll wager they are same inner and outer race on the deuce also, just different bearings.

I think I've answered my own question about CTIS when going to duals on an A3 or a 939A2. There is no CTIS on duals, it will have to be plugged.

True and maybe not so true. Physically it's the same part but once a bearing and race break in together, it's best to keep them together.. Like lifters on a small block. All the same but it's quite important to keep them with the same lobe for max endurance.

Yes, I know about returning a bearing to the same race, but I question if, after taking them out and putting them back in, if that still holds true. I'd probably take an emery cloth and break the glazing off the bearing surface, feeling for ridges or bad spots and not take them out of the hubs. They would end up switched unless there was obvious wear.

If there were any question that wearing was remotely an issue, which is where this rules mostly applies, I would buy new races and or bearings. I just saw races for $20-30 on a quick search and entire bearing and race for $55-75. Retail over $100 each.

Wow I just did mine two weeks ago and thought it was a different race.
I thought so too. While I had my 817 I thought I had a wheel bearing problem and bought all new bearings, races and seals for the rear, so I went and compared them. At least on the 5 ton I can say positively, both the inner 596 and the outer 593 bearings do fit the same 592a race. I had seen flipping them on a 5 ton mentioned before, but until looking and finding the same race, thought it was impossible.

Now I'm realizing it has to be done to go from singles to duals or from duals to singles on either, 5 ton or deuce. I think the studs are the only difference (and of course duals have no CTIS).
