M818 Alternator question

We have an M818 here (um, very NOT running ...) and it has an alternator on it that checks out to be outputting 14 volts and 140 amps. Is that correct or did somebody try to convert the truck to 12 volts?

Should be about 26 volts, 60 amps

so this is probably a generic big truck 12-volt alternator?

How many batteries in the truck and how are they wired? That will tell you if it's 12 or 24 volts.

Starter motor will tell the OP as well as the battery wiring. In series would indicate 24V, parallel would indicate 12V. Many of the M818 trucks went on the market years ago and have been through some changes. I say if it is putting out 140 amps at 14V, the truck probably does not have working lights or else those have been changed as well.

The truck is completely disassembled (and actually looks like a crash site -- parts scattered everywhere), engine was off to the side with all wiring cut and removed, so no way to know how it was wired. The 4 batteries (Hawkers) were still in their boxes, but not wired. Assuming 24 volt, though

Originally the truck would be set up for a 24 volt alternator putting out around 28 volts and 60 amps on a test stand.

No, the 12V alternator is not something you should expect, it is normally 28V at 60A.

Crash scene investigation imagery is located here. Initial investigation and eyewitness statements indicate a possibility that the M818 involved had a catastrophic "encounter" with an oxy-acetylene device and a collection of various wrenches. The investigation is ongoing and any discussion of causation or contributing factors would be purely speculatory and premature at this time. Further information may be released and made public as the situation develops and warrants.

If you measured 14v, it is a 12v alternator. That is all there is too it, as long as you measured voltage off the main B+ stud terminal of it.
