Well, the old engine finally gave up. Not sure how it happened. But I know what the damage is. Do you already have the parts handy? If not it may be cheaper to source a good running BC 350 or 400 and be ahead of the game

You can put big cam iii parts in a small cam. Its actually called a Magnum 400. Cpl 695.

It would be much wiser to put the big cam in it. I would swap the pistons in it though to some 14.0s rather than the 15.5s the 330 probably has in it.

The BC 330 runs. So if I swapped it, then I wouldn't tear it down. Just swap over accessories and call it good. Once the engine gets to my shop I will decide what I'm going to do. If it's going to require a lot of modifications to get the big cam in the truck, then I'm just going to swap parts over to the small cam.

Plus I found aftermarket ceramic pistons. Complete overhaul kit was $1800. Ceramic pistons would be nice.

@simp5782, other than the cam journals and some minor block differences, what are other things that are different between the 250, 300, 330, 350, and 400 cummins.

That's a bummer about the engine going TU. Looks like luckily you have a shop to work in 😀.

I've been reading a lot about getting 700-900 HP out of these 855 cummins mostly by lowering compression, retarding cam timing, and upping the fuel delivery. It would be fun for a few minutes until everything else let go!

Been doing a lot of research. From what I've found, these engines are more than capable of over 1000hp. There is actually quite a few out there and they hold up to it. Not trying to go over kill. Just want decent reliable power. So going for 400-500 hp.

Do you know which tranny is on the new engine? If you don't have to worry about a pto for a winch maybe you could make that one fit?

The transmission on the other engine is an eaton Fuller 5 speed. Its dimensions are bigger than the spicer on the 5 ton. So not going to gain anything by keeping that transmission. It seems that no matter what I do for a transmission, that the transfer case will have to be moved back and it may interfere with the airpack. More research needs to be done.

Which of these CPLs matches with M809 engines? I've read on this forum that 026 is the closest match but these charts also have a listing for 172 and 709 for the NHC-250

If you’re wanting 400hp+, stick with the big cam. You’ll have to fight egt too much with the small cam because of no piston squirters. It’s hard to make big power without heat. For trans I would at least do a 10 speed. I know it will be quite the task in an m809 but it has been done.

The engine I bought unfortunately is not a big cam. So just going to rebuild mine. Using the heads off from the donor engine. If the holes for the oil squirters aren't there.
