there is the difference between us and them ..we do the work ourselves, the labor, the pain, the sweat the joy...if we don't know how to do it, we rely on ourselves to learn as opposed to whipping out a poser check book..... you can't buy respect
.
I remember the high school days where daddy would buy the car for (insert name here) and claim to have done the work. It would be obvious they knew nothing.

Had more fun than could be bought when everyone was standing around looking at the motor - and I would reach down and pop all the plug wires off the distributor. You could see the horror on their face...

My (being a jerk) answer when they would ask "why". My stock answer was "If you did all this work, it shouldn't take but a minute for you to put those wires back". It never failed... "I will pay you to put it back" were the first words out of their mouth.

Like your mention of the Poser Checkbook!
Made me laugh.

You do know that the guy where talking about here built this truck by hand from the ground up, right? While he holds down a real job.

statistically they're aren't many 30-somethins' that have half a million to spend on an RV, broadcast their scripted "adventures" all in an suffocating need for self affirmation whose self worth is soley based on the number of "likes" they receive...

a true test of their intestinal fortitude and quest for "roughing it " , would be to put them on a NYC subway car at 0300 between Bed Sty and the South Bronx..

but God bless them on their next half million dollar adventure...
Really??? It's not possible that Martin is successful lawyer and Brittany does Marketing?

To me there is a 2nd important thing to consider with the our way. Whether it be on the Alaskan highway or the very very tip of Argentina if something breaks on this I need to believe and trust in me and not somebody else will be there so I need to know this vehicle as well as anyone in the world whether it be on the Alaskan highway or the very very tip of Argentina if something breaks on this I need to believe and trust in me and not somebody else will be there so I need to know this vehicle as well as anyone in the world does and I need to know that I have the backing of a community like this or my friends and not hope that some else will want my MONEY bad enough to try and help. In months of reading before joining it became clear that this is a community that is truly supportive of each other.

You are definitely right dbduchene - and this group will support your ideas (yeah, and the dreams too)!

I do have to say that in every discussion we have, ideas will be "simple to do" and there will be those "really bad idea" answers too. Me personally, I think that is the magic of this group. Nobody is going to blow smoke and if they do, somebody else here will counter that idea.

Most definitely an open exchange of ideas...

I started one of these last year after looking at SS and other info and watching the GovPlanet market for a couple of years...trying to learn from others' experiences. I finally dropped the hammer on a '98 M-1079 in near great condition and have been trying to assure roadworthiness while placing stuff, some of it acquired over years to outfit a basecamp,, into the build. Overlanding is a little scarce in the east, but as familiarity with the hardware grows I am more likely to stretch the legs. I have a Jeep community/airline mechanic neighbor whose counsel I trust on small equipment purchases from the new stuff market and am grateful to have some flexibility to get essentials...never was either ascetic or bourgeois...just want stuff that works within the scale of opns. I agree that if you want a project this stuff is great, but if you want to use it a lot buying a commercial product works better. These trucks will take us places an Airstream will nevet go.

Class B is not for combination vehicles class A is but remember if your not in the commission of enterprise (being compensated in any way) hauling for hire . You are not commercial but go by your local drivers lic office and show them a picture and tell them what you will be doing with it and you may or may not be traveling outside your state with your set up and they will direct you in the right direction but be clear to them that its your camper for u and your family only and they will most likely send you on your way with your operator lic still in your pocket,

Thank you gents. I just ran across the GA Rally string and booked a site at Bobby Brown Park in November. I have a grandson due about that time, so the site could become available on short notice and paid, if that becomes a thing, but I look forward to getting to know the folks in this community.

I think the last conversation about this was complex and not straight-forward. I think my biggest question is, if you are operating a truck registered in one state, driving in another, who's laws would apply? I still am unclear on this. Is there reciprocation or not? Towing a trailer with air brakes, weighing over 3000#, I believe requires special licensing.

IF its your truck in your name i would think the only laws being enforced would be the state your in at the moment the chances of you ever meeting a federal commercial vehicle enforcement officer are very slim you only really see them out when they have there 72 hr blitz nationwide at all the scales when they jack with everybody they see like sharks in bloody water ! Your in a camper they dont care about you ! They only hate working people trying to make a living ! They hate truckdrivers because they dont have to go home and listen to all the b.s. every nite They hate them cause they dont have a boss looking up their Ass crack all day every day . They hate them because they are not like them ! They hate what freedom they have left ! No one else goes to a job every day where theyre are people with guns and fat ticket books trying any way on earth to jam a stack of tickets in them for coming to work today !!!! NAME ME ONE but if you stay home and say i cant work cause im a victom they send them a check week after month after years why dont they have a man with a gun asking them why cant you go to work ? But they will get their pen out and if you worked an hour too much today lets fine you a weeks pay how dare you do what it takes to get the job done ! Thats my rant about the D.O.T. IF IT AINT YOURS IT OUGHT TO BE! LMAO !

Reciprocity adds to the complexity. States will honor licenses and registrations issued from another state.

When in doubt, they go to the federal playbook iirc. Thus, DOT is king...

welcome madog,
There are lots of us “ overlanders” with heavy 6x6s out East, check out the locator in this forum. ( Im in the NC brushy mountains as I type!)
Commercially built overlander trucks are made for a wide variety of folks, and not the specific- which is why I build custom.. not to mention the commercial price tags.

my trucks are registered and Inspected RVs through the state and Fed, and require the same lic as

Seems to me that the DOT enforcement guys can be like Building Code Enforcement guys (and gals in both professions!).

There are those who will actually TEACH you how to do something better. It doesn't require a big fat ticket book (trucks) or a tear-out and redo (buildings, electrical, plumbing). There are definitely asprin holes in every profession. On the other hand, if you the driver pop off with a few wise remarks you get what you deserve IMO.

There are exceptions - but in the building trades - most of those inspectors sign up for the enforcement job because it is easier work. It takes less effort to nitpick somebody else's work rather than to do their own work. Especially those who start a business, then quit so they can have government pensions and so on. As a business owner, being the best and at the top of their game is much harder work than making somebody else do it.

Amen to anybody that says anything other than yes sir and no sir to law enforcement if your dumb enough to talk smack to someone that can sink your ship you deserve anything they do to you ! Watching them for the past 45 yrs ive seen some of the most crooked on the take scale officials worse than any gang shaking down small businesses for (street tax) !These scale guys stealing from already poor under educated drivers that cant afford to come back and fight the crooked tickets they just pay and go on sometimes on the spot which goes right in their pockets . When i was in my teens new mexico was the worst you would be paying atleast one of them in every scale you crossed or they would really write you some big tickets so twice a week my dad would have to pay the shake downs so i saw it so i dont have much to say good about any of them if they want to enforce law go kick down some crack house doors and be something to be proud of instead of jacking with poor truck drivers look up the time the trucking co. crossing the scales west of knoxville had to go to the FBI to hide cameras in and under the trucks and trailers filming these p.o.s. unadjusting brakes while under the vehicles on their creepers then fineing the drivers till the fbi made their case then took them out of there in handcuffs and that stuff goes on in every state ive seen it . But this has nothing to do with regular cops ive got their backs no matter what they have an awful job and no backing from their depts my hats off to everyone of them ! Diesel cops not so much !
