FMTV Transmission Replacement

Well I’ve lost my battle with the transmission issues I’ve been having with the truck. Called an Allison dealer and they’re thinking $10-$12,000 to rebuild.

Decided to buy a trans on eBay which looks to be surplus and rebuilt. Going to put it in next month when I get a little more time. Planning on taking off the hydraulic tank so I can cradle the trans with a crane to lower it to the ground. I don’t have a trans jack capable of this load.

Any advice from anyone that has done this themselves? Seems pretty straight forward, just didn’t know if there is anything to look out for or pay attention to.

Only takes about 90mins to have it out and on the ground.

Dumbest part working solo is the torque converter bolts.

A tiger tool will help you with the joints.

Hopefully you have a good jack if you don't have a crane. I use a crane to drop em to the ground then use the crane to move the truck.

90 minutes! That’s encouraging. Been dreading this for a month or so.

Yeah I was thinking of lowering it with a crane. Wasn’t sure if I should have the truck up on ramps to be able to slide the trans out or if I should just lift the front of the truck up with my service truck. Didn’t know how much clearance I’m gonna need.

Trans compatibility is in serial number ranges they are not all the same. Before I bought a surplus trans I would want to see the paperwork with it showing cc a.
Oh great. I already bought it. How would I go about finding this out?

Just use your service truck on the lift bars on one side to raise the truck and drag it out with a 4 wheeler or something or furniture dolly

Perfect. That’ll work. You leaving the PTO attached and then swapping it when it’s out from under the truck?
Hopefully the trans I bought is compatible. This would really suck if it’s not.

I torch the hard to reach top pto bolt nuts off. Take the easy ones off. Lea

Slide the transmission back. Then to the passengers side.remove the pto then drop the transmission down.

Just get a Chelsea pto install kit they are cheap.

Do the same thing when going back in install it with it in the truck but not bolted to the motor

those transmissions come from the local scrap yard. And they look like take outs not new transmissions. I have to look in my other manual tomorrow see if it has the higher serial ranges. Even if it’s compatible I would not install that trans.

All the gaskets are new and would appear just from the looks of the outside that it was rebuilt. Other than that, I don’t really have any information. Purchased it from Beltfed on eBay. He apparently sells a lot of military parts.

BG products synthetic ATF thru ebay is around $100 for 4 gal delivered. About the best price.

BG products supplies additives to shops and dealerships for fuel injection, transmission, oil maintenance and additives. I trust their products

Yes I know him. It’s all base scrap. And he does get good stuff. I looked at the eBay listing pics it looks like it’s been installed. reman trans are mint. And the shipping crate looks pretty mint. When you get it see if the serial number on the crate plate matches the trans serial. If they don’t match then it’s a take out and the one that was originally in the crate was installed.
