Think about this... the stock tires on a Humvee are about 180 lbs, if you upgrade to an alloy rim and a lighter tire (not run flat) you can bring that weight down to where you shave about 300 lbs of rotating mas on your truck, now... multiply that X 8.4 that is the equivalent of about 2,500 lbs of static mass less on your truck, that has to improve performance and mileage FOR SURE ! not to mention that a lot of us circulate with dangerously year 200x tires. (almost had a real bad accident) 🥶

Having said that this upgrade has to be cost effective and look great, what do you guys suggest when it comes to rim and tire that conserves the military look of the truck in the approx 500 a piece (tire and rim) range...?

This is a Hummer, not a Lotus. I want rims that won’t bend offroad and tires that won’t pinch in NYC foot deep potholes.

I don’t mean to be “that guy” and a downer, but putting a HMMWV on a diet just doesn’t make sense. Maybe an all Aluminum F150 is more your style?

Get Cepek alloy rims or split two piece alloy 17” Hutchinsons if you want to drop some serious weight in the wheels.

Get Propane and water injection to improve mileage. Saving weight on a HMMWV is like Don Quijote tilting at windmills IMHO.

Dude... I totally get it, for some of you all of the above doesn't really matter, for me I gave up my car my bicycle and my scooter to get a Humvee and now it's all I have, I go to work with it and to do groceries and church and kids to school with it everyday, to me getting better mileage and at the same time having a safer ride is pretty important, thanks for the advice bro... ;)

I respectfully submit that this is not an economy car. If you are pinching pennies, I strongly suggest you get a Toyota Camry or a Nissan rogue.

You will never see better than 14 miles to the gallon unless you do a Duramax swap

ohh really.....? my bad dude.... i thought this was like a Mini Cooper and I could get 30-40 mpg.
c'mon man do you truly think I was planing on getting anything better than 10 mpg...??? I know what I was getting into and I still am very aware of it but you tell me if there is anything wrong with upgrading tires and at the same time bettering fuel consumption, what is so wrong with that....????

The OP asked about tire/wheel issues, many have gone to say 17" etc, we see it all the time here, I don't see why that would necessarily be an item for the hot rod/mods page and I don't see why the conversation had to go negative respectively or not.

Thats a question to ask the new guy.
Couple of post . Obviously not interested in keeping the HMMWV original.

Kind of like a stray cat coming and pooping in the litter box and it gets covered up.
If not cleaned up it starts to stink, causing more stray cats to come to the litter box and make a stink.
Pretty soon you end up with a box of ---- . or a board full
And you start loosing the cats that help build the place and keep it nice for everyone else.
I'll leave it at that.

No harm done, don't apologize if you don't understand the issue. Maybe in the circles you are used to, or with really good friends, great. albeit slight, you're also raising the center of gravity slightly by removing the weight at the wheels. Not a big issue unless you're spending a lot of time playing off road doing crawling, but everything else the reduced unsprung mass is a major benefit.

At $500 each corner (your budget you asked about options in), or $2000 for all of them ($2500 if you also get a spare) how many gallons of fuel do you have to burn before the slight difference in fuel mileage offsets the cost? That is assuming you can find a decent $500 rim/tire package in our sizes. It's more common to be in the $700-1k range for a wheel/tire in the 37"+ range.

I spent around $1400 for 4 100% tread Baja tires that were only 3 years old at the time. Anyone that's running tires more than 10 years old does so at their own peril, but the runflats can help if one does fail.

I think it would be a lot like adding a lightweight flywheel to a engine, less rotating mass so it spins up faster but since there less mass is it also easier to bog down (momentum). I think this would apply to the tires to and mileage wouldn't change a whole lot tho it might be a little peppier from a stop.

If it were me I would spend the money for tires and rims on a cheap car that would get better mileage.

ok... maybe I emphasized the weight/fuel consumption in a way that misled some people:

The issue here is SAFETY, my tire exploded on the expressway and that is what triggered the initiative of changing all my tires NOT fuel consumption.
Now... if in the process of upgrading tires, I can also get a little better mileage and performance, it would make me happier.

All in all I asked for advise/suggestion on tires rims and I thank the folks who got involved here trying to help in that respect as far as the other folks who started concentrating on ridiculizing me (yes that is a word) because I am "cheap" or "the Humvee is not an economy car" (see top posts on this thread) I am glad I served as a tool for your entertainment. (y) and I thank you too.

Yes Thunderbirds, this is invaluable free advice and I appreciate every little bit of it.

Tires with guaranteed date code of 2018 or newer (mine were 2019 when ordered several years ago, so likely would get newer than that) are readily available at what I would consider reasonable prices.

The owners are awesome to talk to and can get you set up no problems.

Thanks Coug but I want to get out from the "16.5" deal if I change the rim I might as well go to a 17" that way I have a lot more choice when it comes to tires.
