I use 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. Hand painted with small tip paint brush.

IF you cut a background board matching the exterior outline, painted it, and attached it behind the piece itt would give your art an i interesting touch when painted ....not sayin ya should, just another display possibility.

That truck has that style background. The lens on the cell phone alters the view a bit when close up. Same as what I did with the tank.

Is it as brittle as it appears with the grain of the wood and the thinness of material? Or is there a "strengthening" material on back? Liquid glue/binder?

No additional support. Just 1/2" pine board and some technique.
