Just did this job AGAIN on another 3126b truck (2002 with ~16k miles). Measured that new oil cooler gasket and the gasket thickness is 0.013", with the embossed sealing ridges taking that up to 0.020" so the gasket has the capability to seal 0.007" with the embossing - maybe a *bit* more with crushing of the gasket coating. Nowhere even CLOSE to taking up the > 0.020" of warpage on these coolers. And even Josh (Adept Ape) on YouTube was complaining that he got several reman coolers from CAT parts that were warped badly enough to see light with a straigh-edge. There is no spec given for warpage just "if you can see light under the straightedge" - Josh did say that CAT's spec for warpage in general is typically 0.002". So these things are WAY not flat and likely to warp more when tightened down since as @MatthewWBailey mentioned - there's no bolts through the area of concern.

Found this thread. As I'm seriously considering pulling the oil cooler off and checking it I was wondering does the turbo have to come off or can it be done leaving it on? Trying to figure out all the gaskets and o-rings I need to do this job. is the cooler to the block a gasket or RTV?

The turbo does have to come off. And the alternator.

The cooler, spacer plate, and filter housing/cover has three gaskets (two are duplicates) and four o-rings. No sealant has to be used if you get the gaskets from CAT. Also CAT will not be able to find the three additional o-rings on the two-piece filter housing (if equipped) unless you have them lookup the part number on it. The new housing is single piece and the breakdown doesn't show them.

Saw a post on FB that the oil cooler was installed wrong and was bypassing the filter, caused a lot of failures in the bearings, Huei pump, control valves and crankshaft. Thanks for the tips. It’s always fun going to CAT with our motor serial number and they give you that look like we are stupid.

Searching parts on Cats website is terrible, but I’m trying then I thought instead of individual parts there should be a kit. Came across these but now I’m confused the find it parts shows 3 different gaskets but cat showed the top gasket and 2 of the middle gaskets like the second image. I think I have the invoice at my shop with all the part numbers we ordered.

The picture you posted looks correct although it doesn't have the o-rings for the two-piece filter head plate.

The exhaust manifold to turbocharger gasket is just a standard T3 turbocharger housing gasket (divided). For example:

Striking out here. I want to be sure I have all the correct parts. Is there an exploded view of all the parts somewhere? I don't want to open it all up then order parts. Need to have them on hand for quick reassembly.

Here's the breakdown on the cooler. I can't pull up the o-rings on the two-piece filter housing - do you have a picture of your filter housing?

Note the gasket and o-ring required quantities. 4 o-rings and 2 gaskets.

I see the 4 o-rings but you also mentioned the filter head o-rings. Those kits earlier had way more o-rings. Plus on of the kits it has a small flat gasket with 3 holes. I think that’s for turbo drain to the block which I can’t find as well.
When I’m done I’m going to have to take pictures and do a separate post on this with all the part numbers to help everyone in the future.

You don't have to pull off the oil drain pipe from the bottom of the turbo. There are a couple o-rings between the pipe elbow and the block though. You will need those.
