Hello,
I just purchased a 1984 cucv m1009 blazer with a 6.2 detroit diesel. After playing with it this afternoon I have some questions. What is the switch that is depressed as the gas pedal is applied? Also when climbing hills I can here a sound that sounds like a hand crank winch being wound in. It only happens when I am climbing hills and giving it some gas to maintain/accelerate speeed. I also am wondering what the generator lights mean as the gen 2 light goes off but is still dimly lit at and doesnt fully turn off unless the engine is reved up. Finally I cant seem to find the switch to turn off the high beams. Any answeres would be great.

Thanks,
Miles

Chain drive transfer case, check the fluid level it takes auto trans fluid. Could be something with the chain also. But who knows. I have one that leaks bad and is usually low on fluid that is quite and i have one that looks great but makes all kinds of racket. Go figure.

the generator lights mean as the gen 2 light goes off but is still dimly lit .
Gen two is the passenger side Alt
Locate the larger red wire hooked to the alt.
Break out you voltage tester, set it for better than 30 volts , after startup
Gen 1 drivers side should show better than 14 volts
Gen 2 Passenger side should be throwing around 28 Volts.

gen light

it sounds stupid but we thought the gen was bad on mine. it was just the bright sunlight lighting it up. i only noticed because i never drove it at night before.

I guess it was the transfer case. I went 4-wheeling today and checked the fluid before I left as per your recommendation. It was full but continued to make the noise on the trip there. Once I got there my buddy drove his 4 runner up these rocks in 2wd. I decided I should put it in 4 because I have a lot more weight than him. Right after getting the front tires up the transfer case cracked all the way around  without hitting anything (WTF). So I ended up taking the rear drive shaft out, as the main transfer case housing was cracked around where the rear drive shaft housing bolts on and slowly limped home on the front drive shaft .

I will check the alternator tomorrow.

BTW what is a new transfer case housing going to cost or what does a full transfer case go for?

The Transfer Case is the same as on any 4x4 1/2 ton Chevy with an aluminum Tcase from about 81 on (It's a NP208). If you didn't lock the hubs in (from your other post) then you drove it home on the rear shaft, not the front one. I'm going to hazard a guess that the chain was stretched in yours and it jumped a tooth under load. Either that, or the extra torque from being in 4Low without the front locked in popped the case.

The TCase should cost you between $150-300 depending on where you look. I might have a spare I could sell you, but shipping from CO might make it cheaper to get one local.

Joe

Is your T-case broke, or is it the steel adapter between the tranny and T-case? Mine was broken by the GL people getting their forklift into the driveshaft hard enough to break this adapter. If it is the adapter, maybe someone has one you can get cheap. Take a couple of pics and show us where the break actually is.;-)
