Truth be told...I was considering it and I have previously gotten a truck out of Hawaii. It is costly...and a lot of trouble...but it can be done. Here is another truck that I got previously...

Do trucks go cheaper in Hawaii? It might offset the cost of loading it onto a ship and sending it to the mainland....

Absolutely...trucks go cheaper in HI. However, by the time you figure the cost of shipping and trucking, you usually don't save any money and often pay more. The reason for doing it...sometimes there are trucks there that are not available here. I got the tractor pictured above out of HI in early 2002. I paid $6500 to have the truck shipped from HI to MD. That was before the higher fuel prices. I bet it is $8K now.

I should add that you also need to either know who to call or do a lot of leg work figuring it out. There are a lot of parties that need to get involved...the wrecker company, the company that will either get your truck running or put it into a container, the company that will move the container stateside and the company that will ship your truck to your destination in CONUS. I am talking myself out of it...

It costs less to drop it off at the nearest DRMO than to ship it all back to the lower 48. If the nearest DRMO is Guam, Barbers Point HI, etc., than that's where it stays. In the end, it saves the taxpayer some cash. Just because YOU want it in the lower 48 doesn't mean that much to the DoD.

Be glad it comes back. Some stuff in Korea gets used as range targets. Stuff in Europe never comes back. After WWII, a lot of stuff just got scrapped, blown in place, or pushed into lakes in Europe just to "make it go away".

Rust

I think another item to consider with trucks coming from Hawaii is the rust factor. Take a look at the pictures of the engine/air compressor off that truck. Pretty crusty looking considering it's age. With all of the salt spray you would also be chasing alot more wiring corrosion issues, etc. No thanks.

We sell alot of equipment in Florida at my work. We see rust from the salt spray that you wouldn't think would ever be effected with corrosion. Alot of rust coming from the inside as you can't easily wash it. I'd gladly pay a little more and get one from the states not along the coast plus as Bruce mentioned the headache of the logistics of getting it off base, onto a flatbed, onto a ship, etc, etc.

The M932 that I got previously was a USAF truck and was kept in a hangar. The truck only had rust on the hard top and the rest of the truck was clean sheet metal. This truck did look like it had some corrosion.
