Engine Problem, RESOLVED!!!

Here's the issue. My 1971, M35A2 deuce had a small radiator leak. I would also say the leak was intermittent since sometimes it would stop and start. Usually it would stop when we were looking for the location of the lead.

So we never found the leak. I had planned on obtaining a spare as soon as I had a free moment to do so. Today while moving a load of stuff to storage, the radiator got worse. It did not loose all of it's fluid and the highest the temperature gauge go was approximately 195 and that was only for about 15 minutes. Most of the time it stayed on 185 where it normally stays. I did have antifreeze down the side of the truck and the smell of it in the cab.

Not long after she blew, I also got some oil coming through the firewall of the cab and it appears it is coming through the lower left bolt for the heater/defroster deflector. It did not read the flat part of the floor but is about 2 inches wide at the widest and 4 inches long.

Roughly at the same time I started to hear a so like air coming out in spurts. I thought I had a leak on my air assisted streering but it is actually coming out of the back of the engine about where I suspect the head gasket is. Its on the top rear and blows right back against the firewall. It didn't blow oil on our hand but the engine does have some oil back there. It's dark out and I couldn't check it right now.

Today I started my trip without checking the oil. 40 miles down the road it was 4 qts down but I gotta admit it;s been weeks since I checked the oil. I slapped in 4 qts but did not check to ensure it was full. I also added antifreeze and drove another 40 miles to destination. HEDELTA showed up with a radiator and we replaced it (THANKS SHAWN). Check the fluids and the oil was down 2 qts. Added 2 qts but again, did not check after the fact. Drove for 40 miles and stopped to check the oild. It was low another 2 qts. This time I filled it and checked it and it was up to full. I got it home with that little pufsst, pufsst, pufsst sound.

Thoughts on what the damage is???

Head gasket. If they are the old type, that is a typical symptom.

Is that a normal oil pressure? Seems like most of my deuces will run about 30 at idle, but upon first cranking they go to about 60 and run that high when out on the road at or near full speed (2200 rpm). 30 psi at road speeds sounds like a leak somewhere!2cents

We had one blown out the back of the block/head interface. When we were running an engine test in a container, we put a heat gun on the area back there and found it heats up very quickly initially at the joint line as the motor warms up. It then tends to normalize. The lesson here is to not push the engine too hard until operating temp is reached so this hot spot does not lead to a blown gasket. The engine would idle fine, but under power it would blow out at the back, filling the cab with fumes. We could see a bit of gasket protruding from the rear of the engine.

I agree...head gasket. Make sure you get the D head gasket set and not the older C style head gasket.

Yes you need new head gaskets. When the water in the radiator is low the sending unit isnt in water and it gives a false reading. Change headgaskets and adjust valves.

Who has head gaskets?

Didn't see them on saturn or memphis.
OD Iron has them but this is a complete engine overhaul set, not just a "head set".

You will need to email them to see if they have just what you need, which is:

2 late model head gaskets
Valve cover gaskets
thermostat housing gasket
Water manifold gaskets
Intake manifold gasket
Exhaust manifold gasket
Road draft tube gasket

Do your freeze plugs while you are at it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a good time to do hoses as well.

I only know of 2 suppliers of the newest gaskets, Memphis and ODI. Memphis has both so you must specify what you need. Not aware of any other sources and there are tons of the older gaskets out there. The newest ones have s sealing compound on them and the fire rings attached to the gasket.

I just bought a set of gaskets for the head of my 5 ton from memphis last week. It was the new style, but I specified the new style when I ordered it.

try napa or a local truck repair shop tell them what you have commings 6 cyl and get the # off the block. You will also need a special head wrench to do the job. You might try a local national guard shop they might help out with tool and parts offer them lunch on you.

Oil pressure has been reading 30 +/- the whole time.

Why your doing the head gasket, check you oil pressure sending unit and make sure it matched up to your gauge.

My gauge would always read 30 PSI and no more. My gauge is a 0 - 60 PSI and the sending unit was a 120 PSI. I changed the sender to a 60 PSI unit, now is similar to the quote below.

found a number on the memphis website. 260 plus the real ouchy was overnight shipping to get it before Saturday. i found a experienced mechanic to do the job as long as ihave the tools---which i do.

Well, it was not only a blown head gasket but the gasket that was on had been put on backwards. This engine had been worked on fairly recently before being taken out of service. There was very little wear on the valves.

We started at 1030 this morning and finished about 730 this evening. Truck is running very well and sounds much better than before and also seems to have more power.

Photos were taken with a camera owned by one of the guys that helped. Probably won't get the pictures for several days.

Above all, I learned a lot. I feel confident that IF I would have to break down the engine in the future, I could do so albeit a lot slower than the guy that did it with me today. There were 3 of us with one doing most of the gopher work and me being mostly the tool female dog. Long hot, hard day and now finally home.

Memphis only sells the newer style head gaskets, unless you ask for the older style. White owl only has the older style gaskets.
