Texans: how long to get your Former MV plates?

Has anyone ever run without registering the thing just to get it home from where you recovered it. My dilemna is that I have my truck stored in Hondo and have gone through it this past weekend, fluids, etc. It's all o.k. to drive and I want to insure it and get it home to El Paso. I wonder if they will register it with just my paid in full invoice after filling out the application for FMV form?

Done two from San Antonio to beeville (about 110 miles).

Also driven my first one a couple of times within 30 miles of homes without registration, plates, or title or anything. Typically the cops just smile and wave.

As far as registering it with just an invoice... well, I tried that. That is, I tried to title it using the invoice as my proof of ownership. The lady was adamant about needing the SF97.

Can't do it without the SF-97! I have driven my Deuces without registration while waiting for the SF-97, there IS a risk of getting in trouble though. I would NOT drive it with out insurance however.

It's pretty trivial to get a 30 day temporary tag, $25 (cash only!) and proof of insurance at the county tax office. Only restriction is you're not supposed to carry any loads if the truck is over 1 ton (I think that was the limit).

Recently called local DPS and Tax Assessor's Office about one way transport from out of state to Texas.... $5.00 (Five Dollars) and good for any one-way trip as long as the origin OR destination is in Texas (or inside Texas only). Limitation: NO CARGO, but reasonable luggage/tools permitted and you must have Proof of Liability Insurance (a cheap rider on a current policy was recommended by DPS Trooper).

Can't beat a $5 Special God bless Texas

Really ignorant question here, but say I recover a truck from Georgia to bring back to Texas. Will GA, AL, MS, LA recognize a Texas one trip permit or do I have to get something from each state? Seems like it would work like a license plate and receive reciprocal treatment from the other states?

Only if all those states specifically had reciprocal agreements with Texas. Or if it was covered by something like a multistate compact and each of those States had signed onto it.

I'd say your best bet is to contact each of those states' DoT's or whatever they have and ask them if they recognize a Texas temporary tag.

No, unfortunately I didn't win one this round but I'm hopeful for the next one. My wife has family there in Warner Robins, so I've got a free place to store it until I'm ready to go get it and prepare it for the looooong drive home!

A few years ago we picked up a deuce in Virginia (and it was everything you said it was Karl!), drove it over to Illinois and picked up an M1003, then drove everything down to Memphis Equipment. There we loaded them to the gills with parts, including an entire M813A1 bed, and drove back to Texas.

At the end of that trip, we all knew we had been seriously driving, but it sure was fun. So, make sure you have everything you need, make the trip, and enjoy it.

The trip permit actually looks identical to a temporary tag (which it is) so I would think as long as it was DISPLAYED in states other than TX you should be okay. Of course I am not a lawyer (nor have any desire to be one) so you should check with the DMV first.

I am one of those that got pulled over in a 1009 (not recently) twice as a matter of fact. Both times I explained the exemption to the officer, showed them the exemption out of the code book, and both times they did not believe me. The only thing that saved me was having a trip permit at the time and they just told me to display it on the vehicle.

Being right about the law doesn't mean you still won't be inconvienced or hassled about it. That's the reason I registered the 1009 as a regular vehicle as it is my daily driver.

I have to correct something I stated in an earlier post in this thread:

I just looked at one and it actually states that a Texas Temp Plate can not be used on a commercial vehicle over one ton. Since the Deuce is not a commercial vehicle I would say that you CAN use a Temporary Tag on a Deuce.

I was told that the the transport permit (not a temporary tag) would be good anywhere in the 49 states (not good in Canada for Alaskan recoveries, not the Pacific Ocean for obvious reasons) and that when needed, just contact your County Tax Assessor's Office, explain your need, pay your fee, and pick up the permit.

I do not know the official name of the permit.

It is simply a one-way pass - - - NO SIDE-TRIPS and presumably would be questionable if you didn't take the most direct route from point of pick-up to destination.

I had specifically inquired about Ft. Meade, MD to San Angelo, TX via St. Louis (northern route) OR, Nashville & Memphis (mid route), OR Atlanta & Houston (southern route) and was told all would be OK as weather conditions and sticking to the Interstates would dictate what the most direct and practical route would be.

I understand that Texas has recip. agreements with all other states.... but I too would verify directly with the states I'd be crossing once the actual trip is planned.

Would it be acceptable to buy a 30 day Texas temporary tag and take it with you to recover a vehicle in another state and drive it back on that tag? If you have the make/model/VIN then you should be able to get insurance, and insurance on a particular vehicle is all you need to get a temp tag in Texas.

The above two responses agree with what I was told when researching a GA recovery 2 years ago and a OK recovery a year ago. Just give the tax office the numbers for the vehicle and show insurance. Pay your $25 and go get the truck.

Do you ever get any flak from the local police about running without a plate?

I wont be using mine as a daily driver, but it will be driven a few times a week.

I would like to go FMV route, but the whole "club, function, etc..." bothers me.

I have, and dealt with it at the beach last Memorial Day, but as far as every day around my house driving, and even all over the city, I have yet to be hassled but once, when I first got the truck 2 years ago. Unfortunately my beach trip was met with irritated officers who didnt like the fact I was legally driving a large truck on the beach with my group and had someone who showed them in their own books the law. I keep a copy of the penal code in my truck with my insurance and registration.

Although the 5 year thing most officers have never heard of, and I've been accused of having a fake sticker and threatened with arrest until they verified it on their computer.

No, on a lot of the previous things mentioned in several posts.

Don't get FMV plates, use a marking already on the vehicle. Texas allows the FMV registration with any "military applied marking", does not have to be a bumper number, or the "USA" number, it can be ANY marking and it does not have to be on the outside of the vehicle. My M35A2 is registered with the military applied registration number on the inside of the doors. I know a former USMC motorcycle that is registered with "USMC" as the "plate" number (USMC is painted on the faring), his second choice if USMC was already issued was "TP30". I have verified and re-verified this several times over the last year, including again just yesterday, with the Travis County Tax Assessor Collector's office (in Austin).

There is no time limit on paying the sales tax if the item was purchased from the Government, and the sales tax is only collected from the sale amount (not including the 10% GL bidder fee).

30 day temp plates can not be used for vehicles over 11,000 GVW. Don't get plates and that is irrelevant.

There are no inspections of any kind required on a FMV registered vehicle. The VIN DOES have to be certified on a vehicle that has never been registered in Texas. That certification is done by the Auto Theft Interdiction unit of your local PD or county SO. There are no weight tickets required for FMV, that applies to commercial only.

The form number for the VIN cert is VTR-68-A, it is NOT the same one used by auto inspection stations.

Well, I got my plate today. I should get my title in 20 business days.

As far as the VIN cert goes... well, I didn't do anything like that. Nor did the lady in the office do anything like that either, I don't think. Do you think this is going to be a problem?

Now I'm worried I gave an incorrect VIN... I gave the whole thing on the data plate. But now, when I look at the frame, it only has the last two number blocks there.

Should I only have given them those last two blocks? I only ask, because my insurance company called me a couple of weeks ago and said they couldn't verify the VIN I gave them as belonging to anything...

04M-55271 is the Registration Number, 0539-13775 is the VIN (your insurance won't find that number either). What does your SF-97 say? Without a VIN cert the transaction might be rejected, or not, all you can do at this point is wait and see.
