sprag gear transfercase question

The sprag works or should work in all grears. It only shifts into fwd in frist but it stays fwd unless you go into reverse.

I agree, I was in 2ed high spinning the front tires! I got proof

But from my understeding there are 2 airlines that go into the T-case for a forward and reverse engagement. When on a camping trip another member had to replace his T-case before his trip. He hooked up the 2 air lines backwards and only had 2 wheel drive.

Now my question is if you put a switch in the foward engagement line and left the reverse alone, would that be ok? I understand that you would be in 6x6 in reverse but in the forward gears you would be only be running on the rear axles. Anyone see a problem with this?

One of the big equipment companies (I'm not mentioning names) modify all their M809 series trucks to air operate the front drive like the M35's. The way they explained it to me was they cut off all the air to the transmission/transfer case so the forward and reverse are both disengaged.

The sprague T-case WORKS when the rear tires spin faster than the front by a certain percentage ( 7% I think). The only thing the air does is tell the transfer case if it should be in forward or reverse and this comes from the valves on the transmission. cutting out the air just puts it in neutral and basically disables it.

Chris (Steelsoldiers) rebuilt his valves and that thread showed this whole thing in great detail.

let me see if I can find it.

edit: here ya go:

how many times we gonna go thru this? the sprag works in all gears . i plow in the winter and usually take off in 2nd gear. pushing up intersections i go from reverse to 2nd over and over.going up hills if i tend to spin the front will kick in and pull. if you hear the sneeze whenever you hit neutral the thing is working properly.

ok guys I can admit when I am wrong but like I said that's what I was told by someone who should remember,CRS gets us all:wink: But as to a switch on the main air line to the transmission, that WORKS! No more worrying about my truck rolling back on hills or popping when I shift wrong and it might just make my sprags live longer:-D

Are you guys suggesting putting an air cut off switch to just the fwd air line or to BOTH lines to disengage the xfer?

It seems to me that if you want the xfer to always run in neutral you'd want to cut off BOTH.
That way you could also be in reverse gear facing downhill & roll fwd (downhill) w/o winding anything up.

no put the switch on the main air line to the transmission NOT in the lines to the transfer case, and yes that cuts all the air so you get a disconnected front shaft:-D
