Could be the actual weight difference between transfer cases? NP205 (M1028a1) vs NP208 (M1028) otherwise no difference

Maybe some are rated as cab n chassis - no bed - 9400 - when purchased and with 9200 when they came with a bed ? Or maybe one has bucket seats - 2 - passenger and the other has a bench seat - 3 - passenger ????? That is a great question

It was my understanding that the 1028 got overloads to boost them to 9400 pounds from the 1008's 8800 pounds. this would allow for more weight in the bed or a heavier trailer tounge. The GVWR is the weight of the truck, cargo, passenger, and trailer tounge maxed out.

The 1028A1 started life as a 1031 that then had a regular bed added. I'm going to guess that the GVW is different because it started as a chassis cab, and not a standard pickup. It definitely was not an 'upgrade' applied to a 1028.

I have the regular data plate showing it as a m1028 9200 gvw.
Then there is a second plate below it stating it was upgraded to an m1028a1 9400 gvw.

My question is What was done to it to be upgraded & 200 # added to the gvw ? Was it nothing more than adding a bed ?

Thanks in advance.

Ray

P.S. tell me about the m1029 in your sig

Mine has those same plates as yours. Funny, mine had the older style contact maintenance body on it when I bought it, not the shelter carrier.

The 1028A1 is an MWO to convert an M1031 cab and chassis to a regular pickup.

The 1029 is a fictional number that I made up for my CUCV Suburban... I've heard other numbers like 1007 for CUCV Subs, but since a 1028 is a heavier duty 1008, I chose 1029 as a heavier duty 1009...

Joe

Then why isnt the first data tag show it as a 1031 then converted to a 1028a1 ?

What all is done to the truck when the MWO is installed (just adding a reg bed) ?

Thanks for the info

got any pics of the burb ?
did you add the bumpers, grill gaurd, & tie downs ?

I don't know why the door tags are not the 1031, my guess would be that they would change it too. I have been looking for the MWO so I can see how they did it.

In order to change a 1028 to a 1028A1, you would have to change the transmission, transfer case, transfer case shift linkage, rear differential, front differential, rear springs and add the bed. To change a M1031 to a 1028A1, you add a bed.

Yes, I added the bumpers, grille guard, and tie downs to the Sub. I am going to add a 1008 step bumper to the rear soon. I'm debating on changing the grille and dual headlights to single...

Anyway, the wheels have been changed to stock CUCV wheels now so the 'ultra stealthy' white wagons are retired... LOL I'm probably also going to change out to a 14 bolt rear and 8 lug fronts but it's lower on the priority list.

Joe

I agree with changing the transfer case, transfer case shift linkage, and drive shafts. The M1028 should already have the same transmission, rear diff, front diff, overload springs in the rear, and a bed.

I too have a M1028A1 with the modification tag and a old dodge Contact Maint Vehicle bed on it.

The first tag, your data plate on the cab door jamb, has the M1031 id by having the NSN # for a M1031 which is 2320-01-133-5368. The fact that the vehicle serial # has a "B" for the 3rd digit also signifies that it is a Cab and chassis, which is what a M1031 is/was: Truck, chassis, Tactical.

I've had a 3 "M1031" (M1028a1) pickups, they didn't all have the conversion tags on them when I got them.
The conversion tag has the "new" NSN # for a M1028a1 which is 2320-01-158-0820.

The 1028A1 is an MWO to convert an M1031 cab and chassis to a regular pickup.

Here is another point to ponder. I have 3 M1028a2s, 2 were converted from trucks with "B"s (M1031s) and one has the "C" as the 3rd digit in the serial number, which means it wasn't converted from a truck that was originally a cab & chassis. . So, I take it that not all M1028a1s were converted from M1031s then but that some were "original" to the military in the first place .

The "Upgrade" consisted of someone riveting on a new UPGRADE data plate.
I might try that to see if I get another 200 lb payload capacity. I know when I put racing stripes on my Camaro it made it go faster. No reason why the data plate thing wont work.
