what about one of the newer computer controled cummins 5.9? Im not a diesel expert, but my buddy has one in his dodge truck with a chip that he can control. would that be nice to be able to get the fuel milage when you want it then crank the chip up and make some smoke? I believe you have to get a stand alone computer and what not. im sure its more complicated but long run but may be easier to tune? What kind of milage are ya'll getting with the engine swaps? i would assume that the 5.9 is more efficent at making power than the multi? just thinking even with a stock or "turned down" mechanical 6BT it making around 220 hp (not sure exacty what stock hp is) it could offer better milage than the multi?

it's all in how much you want to deal with. russ81 is swapping in a common rail 5.9 ('03+) into his bobbed deuce. to get the factory ECM to work, you either have to use the factory guage cluster or get a 'recovery' code to crack the ECM in order to allow it to run w/out the factory setup. people are doing it all the time with fantastic results.

however, it's a lot more work and a good bit more money. while the common rail motors will put out over 400hp with just a tuner, the mechanical motors will need tuning, larger turbo, and possibly injectors and delivery valves.

both motors will be able to make power. however, when you get to very high power levels, the newer motors are a lot more 'street-friendly'.

also, in either case, fuel mileage is controlled by your right foot. there is no need to 'de-tune' in order to get mileage, just don't use more pedal than you need. often, power improvements that are also operating effeciency improvements will net better mileage as a benefit. a properly tuned mechanical cummins can get just as good mileage as any other cummins out there.

Reading all of this, all I can say is Mudguppy knows his stuff. I still like my multifuel, and for reasons associated with my job, I think I'll keep my multifuel. If cap and trade goes through we may all need to burn whatever.

Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engine swap?

I want to see someone do a 2-stroke detroit swap (particularly a 6V-71, 6V-71T, 6-71T, or 6V-92T). I have thaught long and hard about one, the only thing I lack is a garage and funding. It would require a significant amount of mods, I know, and may not be much of an upgrade, but I would think it would be pretty slick and nasty. Plus there are aftermarket options to add power/torque/economy, allthough not as widely available. The other thing that stops me is that whole handy little multifuel thing. I like being able to run different stuff through my motor (it's a miricle I haven't melted it yet!), and it's fun finding new stuff to run in it. Don't worry, I know all the cautionary details about Running different fuels, I thaught I might as well say that before someone lights me on fire for saying it.

I'm realy surprised that nobody mentioned a 7.3 for a swap. My wife drove school bus and they ran really well. Most had air compresors and they were definately the best cold weather starting diesels I have ever seen.

From what I understand the American deuce and a half runs an I-6 multifuel and 5 speed standard?
The Canadian version runs a GM 8.2 liter V-8 multifuel with an automatic allison mt643.
I found this for sale just outside of Montreal QC.

Mudguppy,

Would you happen to know the specs on the Cummins 8.3 engines? I've searched everywhere online but cant find even simple specs like weight, length, width.

I ask because there's a great donor vehicle a few hours away from me with an 8.3 and an Allison 6 speed. It's an older Medium Duty truck. If the engine fits in the Deuce I might try to talk him into a sweet deal. It's an older drivetrain. 1993-95ish. But it's all bolted together with flex plate, starter, turbo etc. Do you know if the engine would fit in the truck?

Thanks

let me look around, but i think it's going to be real close to the MF. at first glance, it sounds like a sweet deal. but, you'll need to keep an eye on the coolant temp if you use the deuce radiator (small), go without an IC or put one outboard of the front grill, and you'll have to move the transfer rearward.

holy crap, dimensions are about impossible to find. for now, only thing i can find is that it has been repeatedly described as being the same size as the dt466 which is 45L x 34 1/2W x 41H. 6CTA wet weight is 1680+ lbs. i know this is very close to the MF measurements.

i'll have to ask around to get exact measurements. at the same time, can one of the SS members (w/ an -A2 5T) measure the 6CTA in their truck??

I ain't Mudguppy, but here are the specs on the C 8.3.. It would be my engine of choice, if /when the LDT in my truck departs this earth.

Thanks,

That is just about the same as the LDT. When the weather warms up I think I'll go talk to the guy. If it's cheap enough I'll buy it and rebuild it at leisure. My multifuel is fine. But I sure like the 6 speed Allisons. And I enjoy rebuilding stuff when it can be done slowly. Now, how to get a 2000 lb drivetrain out of a 4 1/2 foot high Army truck bed & into my garage ...

IMO a turned up 8.3 will destroy the stock deuce transmission. No data to support this, just a hunch.
Probably instantly, yes!... and according to that chart (post #29) even the 185Hp version is twice the torque of a stock LDT...!

I had thought about dropping a 5.9 but still run into the issue of the truck is still geared low. I would just upgrade the turbo or put the lds in it.

I have a 12v in my 94 Ram. That engine would be awesone in the deuce. It is so easy to make big power with the 12v. If anything bad ever happens to the Ram body the 12v just might find its way into the deuce.

I cast my meaningless vote for the V653

A It fits
B Power
C RPMs
D Availability, nobody wants a antique slobering 2 stroke
E The sound. Oh the sound, like a buzzing V12
It would be nice to know if the turbo model would clear the hood
