rebuilding the alternator

may have been fortunate when I took the front bearing out since it took a pretty good rap before it came out. Once it was out, it occured to me how easily the case might break. Do you guys use a propane torch to warm it up or penetrating oil to aid in getting it out and do you use some antisieze when reinstalling the bearing? or would would you worry about spinning the bearing with antisieze in there?

Dry instalation and use hand operated arbor press. I would never hammer on an alternator case.

As I have said before, if you don't know what your doing, sometimes it is best to let a professional shop(with the right tools) do this type of thing. Yeah, if you don't try, you wont learn, but there is usually a cost to learning. (anyone here ever look for a heart or knee surgery website and think, well why don't I just ask how to do this and do it myself, to save money?)

My Napa doesn't carry the pulley, who is a good source? Is the pulley included in the rebuild kit?

which translates into NSN 3020-01-163-0498,
which cross references to GM 10498301,

I had a local good old boy rebuilder do one of mine and thought he would be cool- Charged me $135 !! for doing just the normal rebuild stuff, all the main parts were fine.

I got a couple spare cucv alts and I will be doing the next one myself.

If you look up a '85 Cadillac Eldorado w 4.1Lv8, the alternator is the same except for the isolated ground.

The capacitor is listed for $6.99

I have no Idea where you are getting this info. I typed it in and only get part numbers for a whole alternator. Is the capacitor from a eldorado the exact one I need? I am clueless when it comes to electricity. What exactly does this do.?

I think those cross references are messed up cause that isn't the right pulley. A rebuilder shop for napa can't get it either. The treasure hunt continues. If I google it I end up with the same pulley you found, but its too small. The pulley should be 77mm not 66, I have a 66 and the 77mm is what came on the alt. Possibly I'll have to get it from GM unless someone knows another source.

Are you sure you need a capacitor? Have you tested it?

The CUCV Alternator is a 27Si alternator that is customized to have an Isolated Ground.

The Cadillac Alternator is also an 27Si alternator that is almost identical to the CUCV except for the Isolated ground. I have been told all the internal components are the same except for the addition post and insulators for the Ground Post. I was told this by my local Alternator Shop.

Wilson Electonics rebuilds the 27Si alternator with the Isolated ground and NAPA sells it for $220. The part number is WIL90014277

Thanks for the advice. Out here its cheaper too buy rebuilt or even new, paying a shop to rebuild your own costs too much. I did have my starter rebuilt once but I should have bought a new one as a new one would have been less than half the cost. I'm going to stop scrapping them or turning in the core and try to do it myself. I'll learn the right way after a few mistakes, but I dodged the broken case bullit on my first one thankfully. Ill support it next time.

The pulley is discontinued from GM and Delco Remy. The original pulley is 77mm and the replacement is smaller at 66mm. It looks identical except smaller. I talked to an alt shop and they said the difference is acceptable, you will have a slightly higher output at idle and the max rpm of 6500-7000 won't be reached in normal driving. If you can't stop the squeeling belt without overtightening look into a new pulley. Mine was very worn and by overtightening the belt the bearing failed.

You are absolutely correct. The NSN number comes up with the incorrect pulley size.

I attemped to installed my rebulit alternator today and discovered the belt was too long. I pulled out the caliper and discovered that the pulley was a 71mm and the other alt had the 77mm.

It took it back to the alternator shop and they said that they reinstalled the one that I brought in but they would exchage it for the correct one.

Talking a little further they said that the 77mm they had was for a Ford Diesel and was stronger than the GM version. They had a few in their parts bin.

Looking into it further NAPA has one that should work.
