Fuel Drum Adapter questions...

I ordered one of these from Delks for $25 (not my pict) so now I need to come up with a hose to go from the adapter to the aux fuel pump on my 003a.

Any suggestions or any idea on the size of the fittings (maybe I can get the fittings and hose at an auto parts store)?

If I make up my own how long should it be, I'll be using a 55 gallon barrel to fuel from?

Is there a difference between a "Jerry Can Adapter" and a "Fuel Drum Adapter"?

If I remember correctly the fittings needed for the fuel pump side are 5/16" JIC fittings. As to the hose, you'll need something that can handle the suction created and not collapse. I plan on using a 1/4" hydraulic hose for mine. The length is entirely up to you. The drum adapters are actually used in the old style heaters. They screw into the large drum bung and have a pick-up tube attached. I have one of each at home, I'll take a picture and post it up if and when I get time.

The fittings are readily available at any Parker Store.

Here is what I did...

The fittings to work with it as is are hard to find.

I removed the fitting that was in it. Then you can use standard 1/4 MIP fittings..

The quick release is off an Arctic Strove kit..

Humm, so what I have is a Jerry Can adapter? The one I have is like the one Coyote has, I guess I'll down to the barn and try it....

Old style jerry can adapter..
Much shorter than the drum adapter.
Not sure but I think if you use only 1/2 of the drum adapter pickup you can use it on a fuel can also..

New style gravity feed adapters for Plastic fuel cans..
They have a 1/4 fip fitting on the isnide you can attached a pickup tube to..
I used fuel line with a fitting on the bottom for a weight..

You can get these on ebay.

Think about this hyd hose is for pressure not suction.

I know hyd hose is for pressure and not suction, but the steel braiding inside the hose will prevent it from collapsing. The only hose I know of that is rated for suction would be a vacuum hose, but finding one safe for use with oil (diesel fuel) would be hard to do.

Edit: Plus I have free access to the hydraulic hose, fittings and a crimper.

Hydraulic hoses are what all of the fuel hoses are on your MEP-002a's and MEP-003a's as well. The hose just has a fiberglass over braid and removable fittings ( I'm pretty sure, mine look like the removable type fittings anyway), but it is still hydraulic hose.

My MEP-003A came with a complete pickup assembly. The hose appears to be original and is definitely hydraulic hose. The metal braid is covered by a very tough fabric.

Don't forget that if you are using and old bung adapter with only one hole, you will need to mod it to work with the diesel gensets, they need a fuel return hose.

We covered this on another thread Kenny. The return dumps into the "on board" fuel tank and has sensors to know which tank to use. Once the on board tank gets to a certain full, it draws from that one till it hits a certain empty, then it draws from the "other".

I was under the impression that the return was to the "day tank" until the "float switch" opened and then it would run on the "day tank" until the "float switch" closed and then it would run on the "aux" feed again.

Bob,

You are correct, the aux fuel on the MEP generators is just used to refill the day tank. When the level of the day tank goes down the float closes and turns on the aux pump and refills the day tank till it's about 3/4 full. The return line from the IP goes into the day tank.
