Starter Kicked and burnt Fusible link on 24v block on fire wall

I WOULD BE VERY GREATFUL FOR ANY INPUT I DID SOME SEARCHING AND DIDNT FIND TO MUCH

Hey yall Merry Christmas to all Of the Steel Soldier forum family.I have been driving the 85 Cucv for almost 2 weeks no problem than this past sunday i got in to crank it it turned over but didnt catch so i turned off went and tried again after the wait light went out Nothing i had this problem before so i went and tapped on the starter and no sooner than i get out from under the truck the Starter started running with out the key so i thought i got to the 24 volt relay and pulled it and took the ground cable off however in that process a fusible link on the 24volt block fried on the firewall and the starter solnoid was so hot i burnt my finger. How ever the solnoid on the starter was replaced not to long ago on a new high torque starter.

#1 new starter relay from Auto zone could this have cause this issue no problem with it before this past sunday

#2 was wondering what guage fusible link on the fire wall was its one of the smaller wires out of the 4

#3 would a faulty igntion key switch in the column cause an issue such as this

#4 I WILL BE DOING THE DOG HEAD RELAY CONVERSION AFTER THIS

This problem was not caused by the ignition switch. It was caused by a faultly starter relay under the dash. The design was for a A/C relay and not a starter. It is just not up to the job of the starter. That is why Doghead keeps posting about his conversion. It stops this problem in it's tracks.

Look in the -20 or -34 manual for the wire sizes, colors and locations.

Read and print off the first few pages of the troubleshooting section and then look in the Appendix for the wiring diagrams.

The one you are looking for is diagram F-1 or E-1 (depending on which TM you are looking at)

The wire and fusable linke is labeled "1 RED-2Z"

EDIT: The diagram is now even posted as a sticky on the CUCV forum

Not giving you a hard time, but that is a funny statement as there has been MANY posts about the faulty starter relays and the starter running all by itself.

well guys thanks for the reply and the ribbing im use to it i guess the old relay would have been better left alone instead of putting a new one on i have had problems with the first starter had to tap on it a few times so its all good i just hope after i do all this i never have the problem again :grd:

Sorry to hear about the bad Relay. Heres a link to the "Doghead" relay mod I did to my M1028. It cost about $15 bucks and took about 15 minutes to do. Good Luck.

im not real keen on where the new relay mounts as i planned on putting a stereo back in as the previous owner cut the dash the relay aint that far from touching the bottom of the radio any ideas for ease of operation im cureing one problem and running into another lol

I have a kenwood din mount sterio in my M1008. The relay is not that close to it. Cover it with rubber or mount it somewhere else if you think it's needed. If you don't do the relay modification, you will have this problem again.

Thanks everyone Even with all the hickups i still love my cucv i get so many thumbs up and i get asked about it constantly as i work aboard Camp lejeune i love the attention makes all this worth while

i hear ya doghead bad part is the relay that i have is an original one but i went to autozone and bought a replacement for 8 bucks i guess u get what u payfor the new relay was what got stuck and caused some of the problem the solenoid could have been partly to blame also as i have had to get down and tap the starter on more than one occasion i got lucky 1 burnt wire and a burnt solenoid is all i got i was pretty quick i saved myself so im gonna do the relay conversion

B.T.W u wouldnt know a place that sales the 10 guage fusible link wire would u i cant seem to find any at all around here in jacksonville 12 and up is all i have found so any info i would be grateful

Hi guys,

A few days ago, the exact same thing happened to my 1985 chevy Blazer M1009.
I took it to the shop that does all the work on the vans for the company I work for.
So I can get it done asap and get a fair price on the bill.

Now here is the problem, The diesel mechanic that was working on it,
left work last week before he finished and is not coming back for some reason.

So the mechanic that owns the shop got the new starter in, the fusible link, etc.
And now the starter cranks the engine just fine, but it will just not catch and start
the engine.

What should he do at this point? I told him to check the start relay,
and he says that seems to be ok.

Would any of you be kind enough to give me some ideas?
Or call him directly and give him some advice?
I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much, and God bless you.

The shop name is:
RodVRod Autocare
Atlanta, Ga.
Phone number: 404-816-1871
His name is Rod, he is the owner of the shop and a mechanic.
He will be there tomorrow (Saturday Dec. 18th.) from about 8am til about 6pm if not later.

If you want to reach me, the number I can be reached at all weekend is:
770-952-2395, Room #477

Thank you, have a good night,

CJ

P.s. With all due respect, please do not flame me, I am doing the best I can,
in my current situation. And I am not pleased with it as it is already.
God bless you... and Thank you again.

Hi all,
By the way, I can only check email from work, and I will most likely be home all weekend.
And will not be back at work until Monday.

Good night, God bless you....

CJ
