As a somewhat new owner of a sprag deuce could you please expand on the first/reverse reverse/first theory, I'm also going to look at TM10
Thanks

1st gear is not synchronized so you have to stop, or double clutch, to get the stick in 1st. If traffic is light I slow down before a red light so I have a better chance of it turning green before I get up to it. It saves brake and clutch wear and a little gas.

Basically, don't roll backwards while in a forward gear and don't let it roll forward while in reverse. doing this will set the sprag to the wrong direction, causing windup, a loud pop or bang when the sprag lets go. under certain conditions you could break something

Basically, when shifting from reverse to a forward gear always shift from reverse to first to set the sprage in right position, not reverse to second. Same when shifting to reverse, if you pull into a lot and coast to a stop from say 3 or 4th do not shift into reverse without shifting down into first gear first then shift into reverse.

You might want to read this thread ... check out posts #3, 7, and 10.

I was doing a little digging about the sprag today ... during my search I came up with another REAL good thread with an excellent explanation ... unfortunately I didn't save it ... and cannot find it now.

hope this helps

Resectifully you split shift don't work.
1L 5 mph 1H 9mph 2L 8 mph 2H 16mph 3L 14mph stop right there. You just over reved the motor bad. You might not have over reved the 1H to 2L to bad but it was close.
Need to read that data plate on the dash.
If you have to read a book or TM to learn how to drive were in bad shape.
I can see starting 2L and running out the lows then hit 4H and 5H.
I myself use 2L 2H and run out the highes when not loaded.
I don't use first on the street. I also let the truck I am driving speek to me and drive it to where there is least amount of strain on drive train.
Every truck can be different but they can speek.
I have driven bigger dump trucks with non synchros and 25 ton on my back spreading the stone 4 inches deep in the mud. I think I can drive a truck.
I only would use 1 low in very soft ground and run that gear at 3/4 throttel till I am on more solid ground in the Deuce.

Floridian, you covered it. with 2 1/2 tons on a deuce, you just don't need 10 speeds. If I want to use a lot of gears I run 2,3,4 in low, then split to H 3,4,5. It gives me a split that works for the engine pretty good. In the M543A2, I run the same but start in 1 L and progress. That truck NEEDS a 13 speed OD Road Ranger, I just can't fit it in there . JT
