Tires - G177 v/s Michelin XL - TRACTION

So I want to upgrade the tires on my M818
I really like the look of the 14.00 R-20 MICHELIN XL tiers as singles but of course I have to find them and upgrade to HEMTT rims or combat rims and not sure of the availability or cost of either right now ?
But the real question I’m looking for help on is about how (6) Single 14.00 R-20 MICHELIN XL would compare TRACTION wise, off road, with (10) 11.00 R-20 GOODYEAR G177's on stock rims?

I have read a LOT of tire threads but haven seen this type of comparison on cost of conversion, availability of tires rims and actual performance of the G177 v/s the Michelin XL’s

This is of course leaving max speed out for tire diameter. That’s its own discussion which I have seen gone over a lot here

So, can anybody help me with these questions? , Opinions? , Comments?

My XLs do great in mud, but are so-so in snow due to the very large tread blocks. Never had them in sand, so can't comment on that. There are decent on the street, but I imagine will wear faster than the 177s if you're concerned about that.

Yes my 925 came with them and I rode them for awhile i LOVE them, I do have 1400s on now but that just has to be done some time, I am saving them for my next truck an 818 i am going to run the G177s, I feel they are a superior tire, duels are always more stable and safer, big tires are way cool and I love my 14s , but they wear fast and well, as for a truck mostly on road these tires are the best, and it is what the Military did to the 939 series for trucks used mostly on roads, they are safer and last longer period, everybody thinks there tires are the best there is, I have run em all, they are all cool and all have ways they can be better than another, but for an 818 funny u mention that because I think that is where these tires will be super performers,........... yes the G177s are 1100 20s oh 150 ea. is dirt cheap i have sold em new on rims for 300 ea. and they went fast.

I am running G177's on an M54, love them, not as classy looking as NDCC's but wow do they pull. Our experience with singles vs duals is that in real soft stuff the singles are a little better because of not breaking new track, but in most of our southern soils (not sand) the duals always seem to out perform. There is NO question that the duals are superior for stability. Also, the G-177's should last roughly 5 times longer.

Nice to see a tire question that is NOT, Hey How Big a Tire can i put on this truck :) :) :) good question about a great tire. I have noticed alot of cement mixers run them around here, in the 22 inch version. they are awesome tires for sure... [thumbzup]

I like the Firestone 831's. They seem to be a nice tire. Does anyone have them on a 5 ton?

I am NOT speaking from first hand experience with tires of this size; but in passenger car/truck sizes, in our area, they can be "sipped" “syped”--- spelling---?? (LOTS of little groves cut sideways in the tire). Sipping helps tremendously in snow/ice, and is the reason snow tires WORK!! A good tire shop can sipe ANY tire. I would personally take either tire over the other, if it was sipped. 2cents

What about changing the rim size on the 5 tons? 20" tires are hard to come by, as only the military used that size. I am thinking about going to a standard truck rim, 22.5". It doesn't do anything extra, except that you can find a tire just about anywheres on planet earth. The 22.5 tires are only 1.5" to 3" taller then the 11x20 NDT's, and use an 8" to 9" wide rim. Any comments? :mrgreen:

If you're going to do that, might look into the new super-single wheels that a lot of OTR trucks are switching to. Would allow you to run their wide-base tires for extra flotation.

there are so many things to choose, it gets silly after awhile, If u aree keeping the truck with a military look, my 2 cents is stay with a military tire in use, :) there are no bonus's to the 22s . and every one will say, hey they aren't military, after the 5 thousand times of hearing that , I wood just stay with what the truck could have come with, I also agree the 14s look super cool, and for my 925 thats the way I go, But i also have a set of 1100 NDTCC's for her too, they fit me real well sometimes too, but like I said for me the 818 i hope to get is going to run the G177s, as for the tire that is like it , well I do not think the military uses it, I may be wrong, but if not they would not find there way on my truck, my 2 cents again, good luck... :)

My 2 cents: If you are staying with stock rims, I recommend the Firestone T-831's - much better "off-road" performance. If you primary use is "on-road", the G177's are fine. If you plan to upgrade to the single combat rims, I recommend the 395/85R20 Goodyear MV-T. They give GREAT on and off road performance.

In my opinion, that would be a mistake unless you know someone who has a lot of tires available cheap. If you switch from the 20" rims, you will be buying tires that can be used commercially, which increases their value. You can find 1100X20s available surplus. I have been looking for about a year for tires for a military truck that uses commercial size tires (315/80/R22.5). None are available surplus because they are snatched up by the commercial market and that means I have had to look at purchasing from commercial tire dealers...not cheap...and that is why I have not bought any. My $.02.
