Went to start the parts truck last week because someone wanted to buy it. It would not start, no fuel to the injectors. Pulled the HH and found the coil spring and retainer in the bottom.
I replaced the retainer and spring and put the HH back on. Upon startup it went to about 5,00 RPM and no amount of pulling on the shutoff would stop it.
It was blowig so much fuel from the HH that you could not tell where it was coming from. It blew the oil filler cap about 15 feet in the air.
At that point it was time to just get out of the way because it was going to get ugly. I had the left front fender off to make it easier to work on. My buddy and I were standing at the drivers side rear when a stream of oil came out of the left side of the engine for about 30 yards, followed by a 6 inch piece of the camshaft and other assorted parts.
Once the engine shut down my buddy went to the passenger side and I went to the drivers side, We could look at each other through the block at what once was the number 5 cylinder. After all this when I hit thr starter it ran!

Why would you "hit the starter"? Run aways, ugh!! Glad everyone is alright. Possible picture to show event?

Next time be ready with a piece of plywood to put over the intake will cut the air to motor killin it. Also cut the fuel supply to it you sir just had a runaway. When i first got mine hadnt run in two yrs was waiting for this to happen but thankfully never did. Glad no one got hurt oh yea one more thing........nopics

Well, at least you still have a parts truck!

saw this happen once on a 12v71 in a mike boat while I was in Alaska in support of Operation Alaskan Road. Scary stuff. We had flappers on the intake above the blowers just incase this ever happened. They sure worked, but it was scary as **** being in an engine room when it happened.

Dont feel bad we had a welder in the shop go full bore wide open if it wasnt for one of the guys it would of blown to. They took the fuel filter off and it still kept goin had to smother it out with the intake.

I don't know what's more awesome, the idea of being able to see clean through the block or your description of the event. I'm going with the latter.

Sorry about the engine, but I almost fell out of my chair laughing about the thought of a deuce peeing oil 30 yards across the lawn.

5th gear high range and dump the clutch with the brakes held. you couldn't just bog it down instead of blowing it sky high?

so after you blew a hole clean through the engine, you tried starting it again and it ran??????

cuttin' your fuel isnt always gonna kill a runaway. i know the two smokers will eat up their own when given the chance. i do believe 2-cycle are more susceptible to it tho. i mean runaways, that is

Yep, Detroits were known for that. Runaways can suck the oil out of the pan until they go Blooey. A lot of older fire trucks had emergency levers to seal the intake if it ran away.
