Yes we all know 101's aren't designed to dump!

One of the trailers in that thread is mine, and posted for this very reason ! You can also review the complete original thread it was based on here, http://www.steelsoldiers.com/trailers/24414-m101-dump-bed.html

Thank you RCD. That was a very helpful and well-documented report in the other thread. You definitely answered a question I had on my mind, but would never try! So the bottom line is keep the load around manufacturer's recommendations.

But many of us do it. It is a happy coincidence that the folding drawbars lift the bed. One day the bracket may break and then we are screwed, but I have yet to hear it happen to anybody.

So there is no need to mention this every time somebody brings up dumping the trailer!2cents
I haven't before, but now I must

Been wondering how that project was going for you ! [thumbzup]

When are you going to get her put back together and try it with a load ?

When I can control my A.D.D. and stick to one project and see it thru to the end. rofl

Todays project, disassemble my 5ton winch and see why the dog clutch will not dissengage.

I shovelled 2000lbs of gravel out of a 101 bed yesterday. I would've liked to get it to dump, but the tailgate would've been trashed by my loader.

Tailgate is the other big pain in the arse about making it dump.

For the tailgate just take two pieces of angle iron and bolt or weld then to the sides and slide a piece of wood in there. When you need to tilit the trailer you can just remove the wood and proceed. 2cents

I've been looking at real dumping trailers and I think I came up with a way to make a M101 really dump with an electrically driven hydraulic cylinder. As for the price, I have no idea, just did some parts research.

Any bed-on-frame trailer can be made to dump with a hoist cylinder and hinges. All it takes is money.

The only reason I did the 105 that way was because I had one chopped up 105 frame (from my bob project) and one complete frame minus the bed.

The last guy I know that made hydraulic dump out of an M101, folded it in half, with a load on it. They are just not built heavy enough for that.

I was looking into a hydraulic dump mechanism. I got into the engineering and drew it out, then figured for all the hassle, add-on parts, welding, re-fabricating of joints, etc, I could add an outboard ram to the rear, a (fold-up hideaway style) ram to the front, and just unhook it and lift the drawbar. When I figured out how much easier that was than all the elaborate lifting and tilting, I had to ask myself exactly what the benefit of leaving it attached to the tow vehicle was. Convenient, yes, but with trade-off's.

Sometimes re-inventing the wheel is unnecessary.

I meant, it failed.

Yeah, I know. The was no engineering involved.n Just want to see how he built it.

Basically it would involve a new lifting frame made out of square tubing and\a new cross beam welded to the existing trailer to attach the ram to.

Only problem might be the added height, but I also have another idea where the new frame won't have to sit on top of the old. Have to run the numbers though.
