A clogged up *insert filter type here* filter will cause measurable power loss on a diesel.

When filters are clogging, you get white smoke and less power. There is no way you can get more power by burning less fuel.

What has probably happened is that your Primary filter has collapsed. This condition usually happens when unfiltered WMO, WVO is being used.

Hoop and salvorone are right.

Black smoke - usually indicates lack of airflow.
White smoke - usually indicates lack of fuel flow.

I mean black smoke and more power. i run usually 100% wmo mostly filtered. I can always tell when the filter is clogging because it will have more smoke and and a lot more power and more boost, usually instead of 3 to 4 psi i get 7 to 10 psi. If i dont change it soon the truck will shut down and i will have to change the filter and there will be no fuel in the clear lines.

I am not sure what is happening with your truck but i do know there is no way to produce more power by cutting fuel flow to the engine.

Black smokes indicates over fueling. Have you ever seen a tractor pull or a diesel drag race or even a diesel pickup running a performance chip? In all cases fuel is poured into the engine and it smokes like a freight trian.

Yea i no what the smoke means I have two hopped up diesel trucks. I know a lil more that most about diesels, but not as much as some thats why i asked to see if any one else knew. the only thing i can figure is maybe the return fuel lines are some how gettin stopped up by the filters causing the pressure in the feed lines to the ip

Same thing happens to me!

I too run WMO, about 1/3 diesel and 2/3 WMO, well filtered.

Normally I don't have much smoke, good EGT's and moderate power.

When the filters start to clog, black smoke, high EGT's and good power.... until the filters are too clogged for it to run.

I think what is happening is that as filters start to clog, but still flow enough fuel for the engine to run at full power, the fuel pressure gets "funky". I think this pressure confuses the Fuel Density Compensator (which ultimately operates based upon pressure differential) and causes it to richen the mixture.

It is true that it won't be long before the filters are too clogged for the truck to run, but there does seem to be a transitional state where it runs great.... right before it dies!

I can tell my filters are getting clogged by my EGTs starting to go up higher than normal.

You are not filtering enough if you guys are getting clogged filters. I don't know which filters you have on your trucks, but just about ANY other filter is cheaper than the stock filters. I try to make sure I filter below the truck's filter's rating to avoid those costs.

I made one bad batch.

I used a spare deuce tank to transfer fuel and after it was too late I discovered it had some reddish "bio diesel" sludge in the bottom of it, now in my truck's tank.

I've run thousands of miles with no filter clogging, and changed filters twice with this one tank full!
