Just for future inquiries, Steve said: "These axles are 4340 heattreated ad made with no thrust washer. The face is made to do the same thing as the stock shaft." So looks like the problem is solved!. Many thanks to everyone sharing their wealth of information.

I upgraded my front end to Ouverson replacement alloy axle shafts. However, while the original axles have a shoulder milled into them to hold a thrust washers, the new Ouverson's don't have any such thing and so no way to put the thrust washers back on.
