I did this on my M997 ambulance recently; I know what you mean. I think I spent half the time just figuring out how to get access to all those completely hidden bolts. Taking the halfshafts out is a must, I think.

As far as I know, the deep water exhausts were only used on USMC Avengers, so they are pretty rare. I found this picture on the internet from a Marines museum in San Diego:

Those very short exhausts were for the Avenger air defense vehicles, so their turrets could rotate freely, as far as I know. Might have been used for other variants. I´m pretty sure they were not used on the ambulances; those had a special version that was longer than the regular ones.

Good luck for finding that rear steps. They seem to have been demilled from all the M997s from recent auctions. I think Kascar had some, but for quite some $$$. The steps could be replicated by any competend metal shop, but are pretty complicated, so a replica would probably not turn out much...

The cables coiled up in the storage comnpartment are for an aspirator/resuscitator thas was apparently fixed inside the patient compartment. I´ve done the cutout with the fuel tank in place, but I recommend to drop the tank. Those fuel lines at the top of the above photo are VERY close to the body. In my case, the rightmost tube was even touching the body. I used a kind of Dremel with a depth control ring, so did cut just a fraction...

By the way: A 37" tire without runflats weighs about 52 kilogram. With a runflat, it´s about 78 kilos, so the difference can easily be determined.

Interesting, please keep us updated on that. I´ve heard a few people overhere claim to have gotten a Humvee "directly from the Army", because they knew so-and-so, but I mostly took that for empty bragging. Would be interesting to learn if a direct buy is indeed possible.
