    Transfer switch MEP-803a

I tried to get a quote from another electrician. They wouldn’t do it. Said their company isn’t allowed to install interlock kits. They sell Generac and I guess they have some sort of agreement to only use Generac parts.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

240/50a I had considered wiring it for a 20kw/100a generator. It wouldn’t hurt. Labor is the same, how much more could the wire be? $200 more? I have to talk to the electrician anyway. I’m going to ask.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

I have the generator in my garage now. I fired it up yesterday. Even in the garage I was impressed with how quiet it is.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

I realized that’s the cost to run it, it’s not just the wire cost. That’s their money on this job. My fat azz ain’t pulling this run. Up 2 story, across a hot attic, back down and through brick and hook up. Nah. They can do that. I’ll stick to just pouring the slab.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

Tractor Supply stall mats come to mind here. Do you bolt your generator down? Or is it fine just sitting there?

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

I just took delivery of the generator and was thinking about this. I have neighbors and don’t want to run a generator any longer than I have to. I need some way of notifying me that my power has returned.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

Ah, yes. One more thing. They do allow an interlock kit here, so I can choose my loads based on the season (AC in summer, more options in winter since I’m on natural gas). The electrician also said he would tell me the real amperage, start up load etc of all the favorite circuits.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

I got a bid that is better. $2300 all in. Interlock kit, labor, wire, etc, etc. It’s 100’ run. The wire is listed at $1500. I guess that’s where they are making their profit. I’ll manage the slab, but since you won’t catch me running conduit up the side of my house and crawling through the...

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

Is 6/4 the correct size for a 70’ run? Do I need a ground and neutral?

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

I got a bid for $2300 plus the cost of the transfer switch. The run is about 70’ (includes slop, jic) in 3/4”emt I buy the switch I pour the slab I set the generator I’m no electrician, but $2300 to run wire and install switch seems high. Am I off?

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

Don’t tell me that! Now I have to dive into the world of raspberry Pi. I have resisted this for years!

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

It’s the Generac 9855. I think he just googled 50 amp transfer switch.

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

Thanks for all your info. Lots of options to chew on there. Some stuff I didn’t know existed too. The breaker selection will be manual. In Summer, AC is priority. The rest is just a bonus. The AC has a 25 amp breaker, but I wonder how much it actually pulls after startup??? Water heater is...

    Transfer switch MEP-803a

Did the search and didn’t come up with anything that answers my questions. Sure, I can do a manual plug in option. Shut off main and switch on only the breakers I need, but, I think I’ll do it right. The electricians around here are asking if I can call the manufacturer and ask them which...

    Why go green?

Coug, Good advice, maybe if I can find one of the above mentioned at a reasonable price, I’d consider it (even if I don’t need it, I’m a trailer ho). I mentioned the 1101/101 because I have two of each and can buy a 3rd 1101 from a friend (as if I need it). Also, I like to build trailers. I...

    Why go green?

The EPAs(?) move to deny Texas the ability to burn the gas/coal needed to provide power in February was a look into the future. They delayed the approval until it was too late. I may be wrong, but I believe we will see the policy of carbon emissions change to the point of rolling brownouts. As...

    Why go green?

Thanks @Coug your info is very insightful. Im 50:50 on mounting it permanently or putting it in an 1101 or 101 in the garage. I can pull it out when needed, or I can take it to the ranch where I am literally at the very end of the line and of the least amount of importance to the power company...

    Why go green?

Yeah, in a tornado, massive fire, explosion, earthquake or other massive calamities, you know the gas will be shut off.

    Why go green?

Ok, that’s pretty easy stuff. I have/had military trucks boats, dozers and tractors and all sorts of stuff that breaks. You just figure it out and deal with it. You can spend $10-$15k and have a warranty, or go this route. I’m not spending $15k on a natural gas unit when gas can easily go out...

    Why go green?

Ah, yes. I was told they like a good load on them and I’m familiar with wet stacking on Diesel engines. If I were to use it, it would be not be difficult to run it close to 100% with AC in the summer and not hard to find 10Kw in the winter. But ... again. Good info.
